THE CRANE AND THE CRAB

Once upon a time a lot of fish lived in a little pool. When summer came, it began
to be very hot and too hot for the fish. Not far away there was a beautiful lake with big
trees around it and water lilies. And a Crane lived on this lake.
One day the crane came to the little pool and saw the fish. Then he thought of a
neat trick. “Dear fish”, said the crane. ”I know a beautiful lake close by. It is deep, fresh
and cool. If you like I will carry you there”. It is silly to think a crane would help a fish.
That is like a cat helping a mouse or like chicken helping a worm.
Then the fish said to the crane “we don’t believe you. You want to eat us”. But
the crane said “No, no as bad as all that. I have eaten a fish now and then. Yes, that’s
true. But I have plenty of other food”.
And then the old fish wanted to know how the lake was. The crane took the old
fish in his beak. He put him in the lake. The old fish saw that what the crane said was
true. Then the crane carried him back again to tell the others. After the old fish tell more
about the lake, all the fish wanted to go. The crane took the fish one by one until the
pool was empty. The crane had eaten every one of the fish.
One day the crane came to the pool, he did not see any fish. But now, he saw a
crab. Never mind, the crane thought a crab is a good as a fish. So he asked the crab to
come with him to the lake. “How are you going to carry me?” asked the crab. “In my
beak”, said the crane. “You might drop me and then I would break” said the crab.
“Oh no, I wont drop you!”, said the crane. Then they made agreement. The crab
would hold on tighter with his claws and the crane with his beak. Then the crab got hold
of his neck with his claws. The crane carried him toward the lake.
But the crab saw that he was not being carried to the lake! “Crane, dear, aren’t
you going to put me in the lake?”, said the crab. “Crab, dear, do you think I was born to
carry crabs?”, said the crane.
The crane said that pile of bones under the tree are the bones of the fish that he
ate. And he said to eat the crab. “Are you, now?” said the crab. He gave the crane’s
neck. Then the crane saw what a fool he head been! The crab could kill him if he liked.
Now he was afraid! So the crane was caught by own trick. And the crab lived happily in
the beautiful lake for the rest of his life.
