Microwave Engineering

The document provides 17 tutorial questions about transmission lines. The questions cover topics such as calculating the propagation constant and characteristic impedance of a transmission line given its per unit length parameters; showing that the T-model of a transmission line yields the telegrapher equations; computing the R, L, G, C parameters and characteristic impedance of a coaxial line at a given frequency; and finding reflection coefficients, input impedances, SWR values for transmission lines terminated with various resistive and complex loads.

TUTORIAL I Date: 30/7/2019

1. A transmission line has the following per unit length parameters: L=0.2uH/m,
C=300pF/m, R=5Ω/m and G=0.01 S/m. Calculate the propagation constant and the
characteristic impedance of this line at 500 MHz. Recalculate these quantities in absence
of loss(R=G=0)

2. Show that the following T- model of a transmission line also yields the telegrapher
equations.

3. A certain coaxial line has a copper conductors with an inner conductor diameter of 1mm
and An outer conductor diameter of 3 mm. the dielectric filling has 𝜀𝑟 =2.8 with a loss
tangent of 0.005. Compute the R, L.G, C parameters of the line at 3 GHz and the
characteristic impedance and phase velocity.

4. a lossless transmission line of electrical length l=0.3 lambda is terminated with a complex
load impedance is shown below. Find the reflection coefficient at the load, the SWR on
the line, and the input impedance to the line

5. A lossless transmission line is terminated with a 100Ω load. If the SWR on the line is 1.5,
find the two possible values for the characteristic impedance of the line
6. A radio transmitter is connected to an antenna having an impedance 80+j40 Ω with a
50Ω coaxial cable. If the 50Ω transmitter can deliver 30 W when connected to a 50Ω
load, how much power is delivered to the antenna?

7. A 75Ω coaxial transmission line has a length of 2.0 cm and is terminated with a load
impedance of 37.5+j75 Ω. If the dielectric constant of the line is 2.56 and the frequency
is 3.0GHz, find the input impedance to the line, the reflection coefficient at the load, the
reflection coefficient at the input and the SWR on the line.

8. Calculate SWR, reflection coefficient magnitude, and the return loss values to complete
the entries in the following table:

9. Calculate the power ratios for the following decibel values:

a) 5
b) 25
c) 50
d) 75

10. The input signal to a three stage system is -35dBm. The first stage has a gain of 28dB, the
second stage has a loss of 3dB, and the third stage has a gain of 7 dB. What is the power
output at each stage in milliwatts?

11. Considering copper as the conductive medium, what is the skin depth at 60Hz and
1MHz?
12. What is the VSWR for a matched transmission line (Zo =50 Ω)?

13. What is the VSWR for:

a) An open Load(ZL = infinity)

b) A short load (ZL =0)? Assume Zo=50Ω

14. A 50 Ω microstrip transmission line needs to be designed using a sheet of Epsilam-10

(𝜀𝑟 = 10) with h=1.02 mm. Determine W, λ, 𝜀𝑒𝑓𝑓 .

15. Design a 50Ω transmission line that provides 90 degree phase shift at 2.5 GHz. Assume
h=1.27 mm and 𝜀𝑟 = 2.2

16. A lossless transmission line (l=0.6λ, Zo =50Ω) is terminated in a load impedance

(ZL=40+j20Ω). Find the reflection coefficient at the load, the input impedance of the
line, and the VSWR on the line.

17. In the circuit shown in the figure, Calculate the reflection coefficient at the load and

the VSWR on the line.
