1. The document is a mathematics test for a 9th grade class that contains questions on direct variation. It includes expressing statements as equations, determining constants of proportionality, solving direct variations with unknown variables, and word problems involving direct variation. 2. The test contains multiple choice and short answer questions testing concepts like how variables directly proportional to each other can be represented by equations, determining constants from given values, solving for unknown variables, and applying direct variation to word problems about topics like distance, fuel consumption, fundraising, mass and volume, and force and depth. 3. The last section includes word problems about distances traveled over time, gas consumption over distance, money raised over attendees,

3rd Monthly Tests (SY 2018-2019) Date: _______________________
MATHEMATICS 9 Mr. MARCELINO C. ARNAL

A. Express each of the following statements as an equation. Use k to represent the constant of variation. (RX1)

1. The weight (W) of pure water varies directly as its volume (V).

2. m is directly proportional to r.

3. The area (A) of a circle varies directly as the square of its radius (r).

4. Y is directly proportional to the cube root of x.

5. C varies directly as the square root of the sum of the squares of j and e.

B. Determine the constant proportionality of direct variation. (Show your solution.) (Rx2).

1. A is directly proportional to b. If a = 20, then b = 4.

2. d varies directly as the square of t. if d = 16 and t = 6.

3. y is directly proportional as the cube of x. If x =64, then y= 2.

4. T varies directly as the square root of L. If L=100, then T= 7.

5. n varies directly as the sum of p and q. If p = 11 and q = 17 then n= 55.

C. Solve direct variation with the second variable is unknown. (Show your solution.) (Rx3).

1. y is directly proportional to x. If y =25 when x= 7, find y when x= 12.

2. F varies directly as the cube of g. If F= 5 when g = 8, find F when g = 15.

3rd Monthly Test in Math 9, pg. 2

3. If 3x+2 varies directly as 𝑦 − 5 and x= 4 and y=5, find y when x =8.

D. Problem Solving: Direct Variation. (Rx5)

1. The distance an automobile travels varies directly as the time. If an automobile travels 140km in 5
hours, how far will it go in 12 hours?

2. A car consumes 14 liters of gasoline to travel a distance of 180 km. How much gasoline will the car
consumes to travel 400km?

3. The amount of money solicited at a fundraising campaign is directly proportional to the number of
attendees. The amount of money solicited for 4 attendees is 35,000 pesos. How much money was
solicited for 30 attendees?

4. The mass of a substance is directly proportional to its volume. If a block with a volume of 14 𝑐𝑚3
has a mass of 35 grams, what is the mass of a block with a volume of 18 𝑐𝑚3 ?

5. The force at the bottom of a swimming pool varies directly as the depth. If the force is 624,000
pounds when the water is 2 ft deep, find the force when the water is 4.5 ft deep?
