O b j e c t i v e ( s ) : Students will learn the details in the system of organization of library


media called The Dewey Decimal System.
Students will use electronic databases to access resources in a library media center.
Students will learn some basic multimedia presentation processes and procedures as they
create a slide show or Imovie showing examples of each of the 10 Dewey categories.

Content Standard:
English SOLs: 2.11, 3.10, 4.9, 5.8
Computer/Technology SOLs: CT5.3, 5.4

Strategies/Tasks:
Students will view a PowerPoint presentation explaining the Dewey Decimal System.
Students will access a webquest about the Dewey Decimal System on the Internet.
Students will search the OPAC for materials in the various Dewey categories and locate the
books and media in the library media center.
Students (working in groups of 3) will create a multimedia presentation in PowerPoint,
KidPix, Hyperstudio, or Appleworks. They will take digital pictures, or they will scan book
covers and insert the pictures or scans into the presentation OR they will participate with
the library media specialist in the production of an Imovie.

Resources:
Computer and presentation device, scanner, digital still camera, digital video camera, tripod,
disks, digital tapes, Ibook computer, cables, firewire.
On-line Public Access Catalog Access to Internet Bookmarked sites on Internet

F o r m a t i v e : Students will access the Internet for bookmarked sites and will work through
the webquest. They will use the OPAC and direct shelf-searching to locate media in the 10
Dewey categories in the library media center.

Summative: Students will demonstrate their understanding of the Dewey system


through cooperatively prepared slide show OR Imovie.
Students will demonstrate understanding of the Dewey Decimal System as they use it on a
regular basis.
