III B.Tech I Semester Supplementary Examinations, May – 2019
OPERATIONS RESEARCH
(Mechanical Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 75
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
*****
1 a) Solve the following LP Problem by two phase method [12M]
Maximize Z = 5x1 + 8x2
subject to the constraints
3x1 + 2x2 ≥ 3
x1 + 4x2 ≥4
x1 + x2 ≤ 5
x1, x2 ≥ 0.
b) Explain about duality principle. [3M]

2 There are three parties who supply the following quantities of coal and three [15M]
consumers who require the coal as follows:
Party 1 : 14 tons Consumer A : 6 tons
Party 2 : 12 tons Consumer B : 10 tons
Party3 : 5 tons Consumer C : 15 tons
The cost matrix is as shown below :
A B C
1 6 8 4
2 4 9 3
3 1 2 6
Find the schedule of a transportation policy which minimizes the cost.

3 a) The cost of a new machine is Rs.5000. The maintenance cost of nth year is [7M]
given by Rn=500(n-1); n=1,2.... . Assuming that the money value will not
change with time, after how many years will it is economical to replace the
machine by new one?
b) A pipeline is due for repairs. It will cost Rs.10,000 and last for 3 years. [8M]
Alternatively, a new pipeline can be laid at a cost of Rs.30,000 and lasts for 10
years. Assuming cost of capital to be 10% and ignoring salvage value, which
alternative should be chosen?

4 a) Illustrate game theory with saddle and without saddle [7M]

b) Determine optimal strategies for A. [8M]

5 In a bank customers arrive in a Poisson stream with mean 36 per hour. The [15M]
service time per customer is negative exponential with mean 0.35 per hour.
Assuming that the system car accommodate at most 30 customers at a time,
how many tellers should be provided under each of the following two
conditions?
(i) The probability of having more than (x+3) waiting customers, is less than
0.2, where x is the number of tellers.
(ii) The expected number in the system does not exceed 3.

6 a) An Automobile factory manufactures a particular type of gear within factory. [8M]

This gear is used in the final assembly. The particulars of this gear are: demand
rate = 14000 units/year, production rate = 35,000 units/year, set-up cost,
Co = Rs.500 per set-up and carrying cost, Cc= Rs.15/unit/year. Find EOQ and
Cycle time.
b) Explain Stochastic Models in inventory? [7M]

7 Solve the following LPP using dynamic programming technique [15M]

Max Z = 3x1+ 5x2.
Subjected to:
x1≤ 4
x2≤ 6
3x1+ 2x2 ≤ 18
x1, x2≥ 0

8 a) Explain about the types of simulation models in detail? [8M]

b) Write about the applications of simulation? [7M]
