BIDMAS - The correct order to evaluate arithmetic

B: Anything in brackets is evaluated first.

I: Any number with indices is evaluated next.
DM: Then divison and multiplication.
AS: Finally addition and subtraction is evaluated in the order that it is written.

Exercise A Evaluate

1. 2 + 3 x 5 2. 5 x 2 + 6 3. 20 – 2 x 4
4. 30 - 52 5. 6 + 32 x 2 6. 4 x 5 - (6 + 9)
7. 28 ÷ 4 + 3 8. (17 – 2) ÷ 3 9. 20 ÷ (2 + 3)
10. (24 – 6) ÷ 3 11. 30 – 9 x 2 12. (45 – 5) ÷ 8 + 2
13. 20 + 2 x 32 14. 15 ÷ 3 + 2 15. 52 – 2 x 4
16. 24 ÷ 3 + 5 17. 12 – 3 x 22 18. 18 + 10 ÷ 2
19. (6 x 3 + 2) ÷ (4 + 2 x 3) 20. 50 – 16 ÷ 2 + 6 21. 7 x 6 – 5 x 4 + 1 x 3
22. 7 x (15 – 3 x 2) 23. 40 ÷ (2 + 3 x 2) 24. 60 – (72 + 2 x 5)
25. 36 ÷ 32 + (12 ÷ 3)2 26. 22 + 62 ÷ 2 + 1 27. 10 – (9 ÷ 32 + 4)
28. 6 + 2(3 + 22) 29. 5(9 – 3 x 2) 30. 2 x 3 + 24 ÷ 6
14 + 3 x (9 + 3) 8+9x3
31. 32. 33. 1 + 3 x (62 – 4 x 32 + 8)
6x4+1 6-1
34. 1 + 32 x 4 – 3 x 23 35. (10 + 2 x 42) ÷ 6 + 3 x 5 36. ((3 x 52 – 3) ÷ (32 + 3) x 22

Exercise B Insert brackets to make each calculation correct. We only add brackets when
needed so some questions will not need brackets, which ones?

1. 14 + 1 ÷ 3 = 5 2. 18 ÷ 6 + 3 = 2 3. 20 ÷ 4 + 1 = 6
4. 16 – 12 ÷ 4 = 13 5. 6 + 5 x 2 = 22 6. 12 - 3 x 2 = 18
7. 7 x 2 + 3 + 1 = 36 8. 30 - 2 ÷ 2 + 5 = 4 9. 24 - 4 x 5 - 1 = 3
10. 16 + 4 x 2 ÷ 5 = 8 11. 16 + 4 x 2 ÷ 3 = 8 12. 20 + 12 ÷ 3 + 1 = 23

Exercise C Insert the correct symbols: ( , ) , + , - , x , ÷ to make each calculation correct.

1. 10 2 3 = 16 2. 30 2 3 = 24 3. 30 2 3 = 18
4. 5 4 3 = 27 5. 2 4 3 = 11 6. 4 4 2 7 = 30
7. 4 24 8 = 1 8. 20 5 3 = 5 9. 17 3 2 = 7
10. 17 4 4 3 = 3 11. 3 5 4 = 27 12. 40 5 3 = 5
13. 16 5 3 1 = 3 14. 5 4 6 2 = 25 15. 5 4 14 2 = 13
16. 4 4 6 3 5 = 5 17. 18 2 4 1 6 = 8 18. 5 4 3 1 2 1 = 12
