There are several main types of thermal insulation: batt insulation which comes as blanket insulation that fits between studs and joists, commonly made of mineral wool, glass wool, fiberglass, or rock wool; rigid board insulation which is preformed insulating boards made of foamed plastic or glass; foamed-in-place insulation where plastic foams are sprayed into cavities; loose-fill insulation of treated fibers poured into cavities; and reflective insulation using foil or foil-backed boards.

Types of Thermal Insulation


Batt Insulation
 Blanket insulation
 400mm to 600mm wide
 Fit between studs, joists, rafters
 Types:
o Mineral wool – inorganic fibrous material; moisture resistant; fire barrier
o Glass wool – recycled glass and sand; spun of glass fibers; thermal insulation & air
filter; most common insulation; one of the cheapest
o Fiberglass – fine filaments of glass woven into fabric; thermal resistant; fire resistant;
acoustic control; moisture resistant
o Rock wool – mineral wool made by blowing steam through molten slag or rock; fire
resistant; thermal resistant; acoustic control; moisture resistant

Rigid Board Insulation


 Preformed, non-structural insulating board of foamed plastic or cellular glass
 Expanded polystyrene foam board
 Can only be used in PMR system

Foamed-in-place Insulation
 Foamed plastic, polyurethane, polyisocyanurate
 Sprayed into a cavity and adheres to the surrounding surface
 Best insulation for application

Loose-fill Insulation
 Treated cellulosic fibers
 Poured or blown through a nozzle into a cavity

Reflective Insulation
 High reflectivity & low emissivity
 Paper-backed aluminium foil, foil backed gypsum board
