What Is Server?
What Is Server?
Server is the physical device or the computer program that provides the services to the
another physical device and its users or the clients. Servers provides the various
functionality often called as “services”, such as sharing multiple data and performing
the required action for the client.
Purposes of Server
server is a computer used in a network and which provides a service to a client.
Servers usually have more processing power, memory and storage than client
computers.
The client is the computer that is not acting as the server, at least at that point in
time, and is requesting information or a service from the server.
When computers are connected in some physical (or wireless) way and sharing
services or information, this is referred to as a computer network.
In a computer network, there are two or more participants where at least one of
them is acting as a client and one is acting as the server.
Client Server
Client–server model is a distributed application structure that partitions tasks or
workloads between the providers of a resource or service, called servers, and service
requesters, called clients.
The client-server characteristic describes the relationship of cooperating programs in
an application. The server component provides a function or service to one or many
clients, which initiate requests for such services. Servers are classified by the services
they provide
Types of Server
File Server :With a file server, the Computer Network client passes requests for
computer network files or file records over a computer network to the file server. This
form of computer network data service requires large bandwidth and can slow a
computer network with many users down considerably. Traditional LAN (Local area
Network) computing allows users to share resources, such as data files and peripheral
devices, by moving hem from standalone PCUs onto a Networked File Server (NFS).
Mail Server :A mail server (sometimes also referred to an e-mail server) is a server
that handles and delivers e-mail over a network, usually over the Internet. A mail
server can receive e-mails from client computers and deliver them to other mail
servers.
Web Server :Web server is a program that uses HTTP to serve files that create web
pages to users in response to their requests, which is sent by their computers HTTP
connection. Any server that delivers an XML document to another device can be a
web server.
Application Server :An application server is a software framework that provides both
facilities to create web applications and a server environment to run them. Application
Server Frameworks contain a comprehensive service layer model.
Real-Time Communication Server :Real-time communications (RTC) is a term
used to refer to any live telecommunications that occur without transmission delays.
RTC is nearly instant with minimal latency. RTC data and messages are not stored
between transmission and reception.
FTP Server : An FTP server is a computer which has a file transfer protocol (FTP)
address and is dedicated to receiving an FTP connection. An FTP server needs a
TCP/IP network for functioning and is dependent on usage of dedicated servers with
one or more FTP clients. In order to ensure that connections can be established at all
times from the clients, an FTP server is usually switched on. An FTP server is an
important component in FTP architecture and helps in exchanging of files over
internet.
Collaboration Server :Collaboration is a unique feature in the Stellent products,
allowing users to create, manage, and modify projects within the Content Server.
