The Different Types of Chemical Reactions: Trishalyn Mickaela T. Roberto BSMT 1-I

The document discusses several common types of chemical reactions: 1. Synthesis reactions involve two reactants combining to form a new product and often release energy. 2. Decomposition reactions involve a single compound breaking down into two or more products, such as butane burning. 3. Displacement reactions involve an element displacing another from a compound, like copper displacing silver from silver nitrate. 4. Metathesis reactions involve the exchange of parts between reactants to form new products, such as sodium chloride reacting with sulfuric acid. 5. Combustion reactions involve a substance reacting with oxygen to produce heat and a flame.

The Different Types of

Chemical Reactions

BSMT 1-I

The chemical behavior of the elements is characterized by the ways in which they and their compounds react.
Several common types of reactions are discussed below:
1.Synthesis Reaction: According to Mettler (2018) said in the simplest cases, a synthesis reaction occurs
when two different atoms or molecules interact to form a different molecule or compound. Most of the time,
when a synthesis reaction occurs, energy is released, and the reaction is exothermic. However, an
endothermic outcome is also possible.
2. Decomposition Reaction: A decomposition reaction is a reaction in which single compound reacts to
give two or more substances. Often these reactions is when the temperature is raised (Ebbing, 1996).
Example:
 Butane burns in air as follows
2C4H10(g)+
3. Single Displacement Reaction: A displacement reaction (also called single replacement reaction) is a
reaction in which an element reacts with a compound displacing an element from it (Ebbing, 1996).
Example:
 The reaction that occurs when you dip a copper metal strip into a solution of silver nitrate
Cu(s)+2AgNO3(aq) Cu(NO3)2(aq)+2Ag(s)
 When you dip a zinc metal strip into an acid solution, hidden bubbles of hydrogen form on
the metal and escape from the solution
Zn(s)+2HCl(aq) ZnCl2(aq)+H2(g)

4. Metathesis: A exchange (or metathesis) reaction is a reaction between compounds that, when written as
a molecular equation, appears to involve the exchange of parts between the two reactants (Ebbing, 1996).
We can expect a metathetical reaction to occur when an insoluble compound, a gas, a non-electrolyte, or a
weak electrolyte is formed as a product (Holtzclaw et.al, 1984).
Example:
 Solid sodium chloride reacts with concentrated sulfuric acid to give gaseous hydrogen
chloride and sodium hydrogen sulfate
NaCl(s)+H2SO4(l) HCl(g)+NaHSO4(s)
 A solution of KC2H5CO2, the potassium salt of the weak acid propionic acid reacts with a
solution of HCl to give a solution containing C2H5CO2H molecules and the salt KCl
K+(aq) +C2H5CO2-(aq)+H3O+(aq)+Cl-(aq) C2H5CO2H(aq)+K+(aq)+Cl-(aq)+ H2O
5. Combustion Reaction: A combustion reaction is a reaction in which a substance reacts with oxygen,
usually with the rapid release of heat to produce a flame.
7.Oxidation-reduction: A half reaction is two parts of an oxidation-reduction, one part of which involves a
lose electrons (or increase of oxidation number) and the other a gain of electrons (or decrease of oxidation
number).
8.Neutralization reaction: A neutralization reaction is a reaction of an acid and a base that result an ionic
compound and possibly water. When a base is added to an acid solution the acid is said to be neutralized.
