GUILLERMO ESTRELLA TOLENTINO

 He is consider as the “Father of Philippine Arts” because of his


great works.
 He was born in Malolos, Bulacan on 24 July 1890.
 Before his formal schooling,he use to mold horses and dogs in clay,
out of the materials from the banks of the fishponds in town.
 He attended School of Fine Arts in University of the Philippines
under Vicente Rivera for painting and later for sculpture under
Vicente Francisco.He graduated painting in sculpture in 1915 with
prizes in all subjects.
 In 1919, he decided to go to America and work as a waiter. Bernard
Baruch saw the statue he made “Freedom” and he granted him a
scholarship in Ecole de Beaux Arts.
 He study also in Regge Instituto Superiore di Belle Arti di Roma in
Rome where he created the the Saluto Romano and won 2nd prize.
 In 1923, he returned to the Philippines where he opened his own
studio in Manila.
 In 1926, he was appointed as instructor for sculpture in School of
Fine Arts in University of the Philippines.
 He won the design and commissioning of “The Bonifacio
Monument” in 1930. He made also the “Oblation” that symbolizes
the academic freedom in UP.
 He appointed as a Director for the School of Fine Arts in 1955.
 He died 8:00 in the evening on July 12, 1976 at his house in Retiro
Street, Quezon City.
 These are the awards given to Guillermo Tolentino;
 1959 – UNESCO Cultural Award in Sculpture
 1963 – Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award
 1967 – Republic Cultural Heritage Award
 1970 – Presidential Medal of Merit
 1972 – Diwa ng Lahi Award
 1973 – National Artist of the Philippines for Visual Arts in
Sculpture
GUILLERMO TOLENTINO’s FAMOUS WORKS
*THE OBLATION
 In 1935, President Rafael Palma, president of the University of the

Philippines, commissioned Tolentino sculpt the Oblation, a statue based on


the second stanza of Jose Rizal’a Mi Ultimo Adios
 He used concrete to create the statue but it was painted to look like bronze
 The statue’s model was Anastacio Cadio, his assistant, whose physique was
combined with the proportion of Virgilio Raymundo, his brother-in-law
 The statue serves as the iconic symbol of the University of the Philippines. It
depicts a man facing upward with arms outstretched, symbolizing selfless
offering of oneself to his union.
 The statue signifies academic freedom
 It was done in Italy with the supervision of Tolentino himself. On November
29, 1958, 23 years after it was unveiled in the Padre Faura quadrangle, the
9-foot tall bronze Oblation was unveiled with a plaque that has fine
handwriting in the likeness Rizal’s.
 In 1949, it was later transferred to UP Diliman
*THE BONIFACIO MONUMENT
 He joined a contest in 1930 to design the Bonifacio Monument. He
interviewed the people who participated in the Philippine Revolution,
instead of basing the statue in printed materials.
 The figure was based on the bone structure of Espiridonia Bonifacio, the
Supremo’a surviving sister.
 Tolentino’a entry won the The first place and was given a cash prize of 3,000
pesos.
 It is a memorial monument in Caloocan
 It is made to commemorate Philippine Revolutionary Andres Bonifacio ,
the founder and Supremo of the Katipunan.
 It is commissioned in August 9, 1930, he completed the figures in 1932, and
he sent it to Italy for bronze casting. In 1933 he completed the Bonifacio
Monument.
