Tutorial 2:

Question 1:

Find angle α and express the force F = 400kN as Cartesian vector.

400kN

Figure 1

Answer:
Apply 3D-Relation Equation:
cos2α + cos2 β + cos2 γ = 1
cos2α + cos2 60˚ + cos2 45˚ = 1
cos2α = 1 − cos2 60˚ − cos2 45˚
cos α = (1 − cos2 60˚ − cos2 45˚)0.5
α = cos-1 (0.5) = 60˚

Force F in Cartesian Vector:

F = F cos αi + F cos βj + F cos γk
F = {400 cos 60˚i + 400 cos 60˚j + 400 cos 45˚k} kN
F = {200i + 200j +282.8k} kN

Question 2:

Determine the length and direction of a cable measured from A towards B as shown in Figure
2 by position vector.

Figure 2

Answer:
Coordinate A & B:
A = {3i − 2j + 0k} m
B = {−3i + 4j + 3k} m
rAB = rB – rA
= {(−3i + 4j + 3k) − (3i − 2j + 0k)} m
= {−6i +6j + 3k} m

Length of cable, rAB

rAB   62  62  32  9m

Unit vector in the director of rAB

u = rAB /rAB (in fraction for calculate θ)

Answer:
Coordinate A & B:
A = {0i + 0j + 14k} m
B = {5i − 6j + 0k} m
C = {−3i − 3j + 0k} m
D = {2i + 6j + 0k} m

rAB = rB – rA

rAC = rC – rA

rAD = rD – rA
