UNIT 34 Exercises

34.1 Put the verb into the correct form.


Examples: If I found a $100 bill on the street, I ..would keep..............(keep) it.
They'd be very angry if you .didn’t visit (not/visit) them.

1. If the company offered me the job, I think I would take(take) it.


2. I'm sure Liz will lend you some money. I would be very surprised if she refused
(refuse).
3. Many people would be out of work if that factory closed(close) down.
4. If she sold her car, she wouldn’t get (not/get) much money for it.
5. They're expecting us. They would be disappointed if we didn’t come

34.2 Make questions.

Example: Perhaps one day somebody will give you a lot of money.

34.3 Answer these questions in the way shown. Example: Are you going to take
the 10:30 train? (we / arrive too early)

35.1 Put the verb into the correct form.
Examples: If .I know...................... (know) her number, I would call her.
I .wouldn’t buy............(not/buy) that coat if I were you.

1. I would give (give) you a cigarette if I had one, but I'm afraid I don't.
2. This soup would taste better if it had (have) more salt in it.
3. If you didn’t go(not/go) to bed so late every night, you wouldn't be so tired
all the time.
4. I wouldn't mind living in England if the weather were (be) better.
5. I'd help you if I could (can), but I'm afraid I can't.
6. If I were you, I wouldn’t marry (not/marry) him.
7. We would gladly buy that house if it weren’t (not/be) so small.

35.2 Read the situation and write a sentence with if.


Example: We don't visit you very often because you live so far away.
But if you didn’t live so far away, we would visit you more often .
1. People don't understand him because he doesn't speak very clearly.
But if he spoke very clearly, people would understand him.
2. I'm not going to buy that book because it's too expensive.
But if that book weren’t expensive, I would buy that book.
3. She doesn't go out very often because she can't walk without help.
But if she could walk without help, she would go out very often.
4. He's fat because he doesn't get any exercise.
But if he got any exercise, he wouldn’t fat.
5. We can't have lunch outside because it's raining.
But if it weren’t rainning, we could have lunch outside.

6. I can't meet you tomorrow evening because I have to work.

But if I had to work, I could meet you tomorrow.

35.3 Write sentences with I wish...

Example: I don't know many people (and I'm lonely). I wish I knew more people.

1. I can't give up smoking (but I'd like to). I wish I could give up smoking.
2. I don't have any cigarettes (and I need one). I wish I had any cigarettes
3. George isn't here (and I need him). I wish George were here.
4. It's cold (and I hate cold weather). I wish it weren’t cold.
5. I live in New York City (and I hate New York City). I wish I didn’t live in New York City.
6. Tina can't come to the party (she's your best friend). I wish Tina could come to the party.
7. I have to work tomorrow (but I'd like to stay in bed) I wish I hadn’t to work tomorrow.
8. I don't know anything about cars (and my car has just broken down).
I wish I knew anything about cars.
9. I'm not lying on a beautiful sunny beach (and that's a shame).
I wish I were lying on a beautiful sunny beach.
UNIT 36 Exercises
36.1 Put the verb into the correct form.
Examples: If I ....had known............................(know) that you were sick last week, I'd have
gone to see you.
Tom wouldn't. have taken.........(not/take) the exam if he had known that it
would be so difficult.

1. Jim got to the bus stop in time. If he had missed (miss) the bus, he
would have been late for his interview.
2. It's good that Ann reminded me about Tom's birthday. I would have forgotten
(forget) if she hadn't reminded me.
3. We might not have stayed at this hotel if Debbie hadn’t recommended
(not/recommend) it to us.
4. I'd have sent you a postcard while I was on vacation if I had had
(have) your address.

36.2 Read the situation and write a sentence with if.

Example: She didn't eat anything because she wasn't hungry.


If she had been hurry, she would have eaten something...........................................

1. The accident happened because the driver in front stopped so suddenly.


If the driver in front hadn’t stopped so suddenly, the accident wouldn’t have happened.
2. I didn't wake George because I didn't know he wanted to get up early.
If I had known George wanted to get up early, I would have woken him.
3. I was able to buy the car because Jim lent me the money.
If Jim hadn’t lent me the money, I would have bought the car.
4. She wasn't injured in the crash because she was wearing a seat belt.
If she hadn’t worn a seat belt, she would have ben injured in the crash.
5. You're hungry now because you didn't have breakfast.
If you had had breakfast, you wouldn’t have been hungry now.
6. She didn't buy the coat because she didn't have enough money on her.
If she had had enough money on her, she would have bought the coat.

36.3 Imagine that you are in each situation. Make a sentence with I wish... Example:
You've eaten too much and now you feel sick.
You say: I wish I hadn’t eaten so much........................................................

1. You've just painted the door red. Now you decide that it doesn't look very nice.
You say: I wish I hadn’t painted the door red.
2. You are walking in the country. You would like to take some photographs, but you didn't
bring your camera. You say: I had brought my camera.
3. A good friend of yours visited your town, but unfortunately you were away when he
came. So you didn't see him. You say: I wish I had been away when my friend came.
4. You've just come back from your vacation. Everything was fine except for the hotel,
which wasn't very good. You say: I wish the hotel had been very good.
UNIT 39 Exercises
Read the sentence and then write a new sentence with the same meaning. Use unless.
1. You should listen carefully or you won't know what to do.
You won't know what to do unless you should listen carefully.
2. We have to hurry or we'll miss the train. We'll miss the train unless we have to hurry.
3. You have to speak very slowly or he won't be able to understand you.
He won’t be able to understand you unless you have to speak.
4. I have to get a raise or I'll look for another job.
I’ll look for another job unless I have to get a raise.

5. She has to apologize to me or I won't forgive her.

I won’t forgive her unless she has to apologize to me.

Read the sentence with only Hand then write a new sentence with unless.
1. I'm going to the party only if you go too. I'm not going to the party unless you go too.
2. You are allowed into the club only if you are a member. You're not alowed into the club
unless you are a member
3. The dog will attack you only if you move. The dog will attack you unless you don’t move.
4. She'll speak to you only if you ask her a question. She’ll speak to you unless you don’t ask her
a question.
