LAB: 03 Title: RL Series Circuit: Electrical Circuits (DET2033), Department of Electrical Engineering, PSP

This lab document provides instructions for students to complete a lab on an RL series circuit. The learning outcomes are for students to understand how to calculate and measure currents and voltages in an RL series circuit. The document outlines the theory that in an RL series circuit, the current is the same through both components and the applied voltage is equal to the sum of the voltage drops across the resistor and inductor. It also provides the circuit diagram, component values, procedures for setting up the circuit and measuring voltages and current, formulas, sample calculations, and questions for students to analyze values in a given RL series circuit.

TITLE: RL SERIES CIRCUIT

Learning Outcomes:

Students will understand the RL series circuit and calculate , measure the current and voltages using
the meter .
Laboratory Equipment:
1. AC ELECTRONICS – 1 Board
2. AC voltmeter
3. Ohmmeter

Theory:

RL Series Circuit
By referring to Figure 1, in an a.c. RL series circuit
 the current is common to each component (I = IR = IL) and is thus taken as the reference phasor.
 the applied voltage VS is the phasor sum of VR and VL
 voltage drop across the resistor, VR in phase with the current
 voltage drop across the inductor, VL is leads the current by 90°
 thus the current, I lags the applied voltage VS by an angle lying between 0° and 90° (depending on the
values of VR and VL).

PROCEDURES :
1. Connect the AC ELECTRONICS – 1 GND terminal ( top right corner of the board ) to the ground
terminal of the instruments which will be connected to the board.
2. Connect the circuit as shown in figure 1.
3. You will use this circuit to measure the value inductance and demonstrate how the inductive reactance
varies with changes of inductance and frequency.
4. Connect your ac 30V across R3 (1kΩ ) .Measure the voltage across R3.Record the value :
EA = ________________________________V (4m)
5. Measure the voltage across the inductor,L1 and record the value :
EL = _________________________________ V (4m)
6. Measure the voltage across the resistor,R3 and record the value :
ER = _________________________________ V (4m)
7. Using the voltage values measured above and the other circuit values shown figure 1 , compute the
inductance of this coil and record it :
L = ______________________________________ H (6m)
8. Remove the inductor connection and measure its resistance with your ohmmeter.Record the value :
Coil resistance = _____________________________Ω (2m)
