FIELD REPORT

On March 7, Thursday morning we were scheduled for an interview with Dr. Ruben
Encarnacion. Dr. Ruben aka Dr. E, is a Clinical Psychologist focused on addressing the
psychological needs of children and parents within the framework of the family system. At St.
Lukes Global City, he is consultant psychotherapist for adults at the Institute of Neurosciences.
At Primecare, he is consultant psychotherapist for adolescents. He obtained his PhD in Clinical
Psychology, MA in Counseling Psychology, and B.S. in Management Engineering, cum laude, all
from Ateneo De Manila University and has since been a writer and frequent speaker for various
talks and conferences. He is also an educator, he has served as part-time Professorial Lecturer at
Ateneo, DLSU & Miriam Graduate Schools, Assumption, Kalayaan Colleges, Arellano & Lyceum
University of the Philippines, as well as a Psych Boards Reviewer for Pathways International.

Throughout the interview, we learned that at the age of 26, he got his PhD and was invited
to come to Columbia University yet he rejected this offer due to some circumstances. He was
very detailed in explaining the most important factor into being an effective psychologist, which
for him is requires a great effort in “time management”. He also emphasized the importance of
prioritizing your own mental and physical health, because he believed that it reflects to the
performance as a psychologist, as he believed that “your top priority is yourself, you don’t owe
anyone even your parents.”

Individual Reflection

Immersing ourselves with a line of work that interests us is a great advantage for us career-
wise. I had a lot of great insights about what Dr. E told us. When we asked him to give advice for
aspiring psychologist like him, he told us that: If you think you have the gift to touch people’s
lives, then go for it. It’s not for everyone but if you think that you have a gift then go. Be the best
at any field that you’re interested in (NV). I felt empowered when he said that. It gave me a sense
of hope that someday I can also achieve the things that he has now. On the second hand, what also
caught my attention was his answer on the challenges that he faced in his work profession: Time
Management. Now, it was so easy again to question myself if I really am capable of being a
psychologist. From being empowered to being doubtful. I admit that I’m not good at handling my
time since I always procrastinate at everything I do. But overall, Dr. E influenced me and my life
beyond class by knowing more about psychology with the help of him showing us the ropes of
being a clinical psychologist for a day.

Laure, Cristina D.

Throughout the day, I learned that you shouldn’t neglect your own physical and mental
health over your job, and allotting personal time is an essential it affects your performance as a
psychologist. Also, I learned that it’s not impossible as a psychologist being affected emotionally
and mentally by the cases of the clients though this can be a factor on how effective someone
into his job, and also the personal life shouldn’t interfere into your own profession because it can
and will affect your performance as well the people you’re around with, as it can be a cause of
overthinking especially in severe cases, but sympathizing is not prohibited, matter of fact it shows
that you understand the clients upbringing and this conveys a more understanding that allows a
better communication towards the client and the psychologist.

I also realized that your profession defines who you are as a person and how you handle
yourself in life still depends on your decision making, but your parents affects who you are today
as a person as well as your perspectives in life including the issues. Dr. Ruben made it clear that
time management is certainly the most important element in achieving and being a productive
individual.
