Reasoning With Equations and Inequalities: Algebra I/Unit 1/lesson Seed

This document provides a lesson plan for teaching students how to solve rational equations algebraically and identify extraneous solutions. Students are given an octahedron worksheet with rational equations on one side and solution sets on the other. Students must solve each equation and match it to the correct solution set by writing the problem number on the corresponding flap. When completed, the flaps will form an octahedron shape. This activity allows students to practice solving rational equations while expressing their understanding in a three-dimensional, hands-on way. The goal is for students to apply their knowledge of solving rational equations and identifying extraneous solutions.

Algebra I/Unit 1/Lesson Seed [SOLVING RATIONAL EQUATIONS - OCTAHEDRON]

MSDE Mathematics Lesson Seed

Domain
Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities

Cluster Statement
Understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the reasoning

Standard
A.REI.2 Solve simple rational equations in one variable, and give examples showing how
extraneous solutions may arise.
Purpose/Big Idea:
The activity in this lesson seed provides a novel way to provide practice in solving rational equations
algebraically. Some of the problems have extraneous solutions. Students will need to apply their
knowledge of extraneous solutions to successfully build the octahedron.

This activity adheres to UDL Principle II Multiple Means of Expression in that it gives students another
option for expressing what they know.

Materials:
 Worksheet (see attached)
 Scissors
 glue

Description of how to use the activity:

1. Make a copy of the octahedron worksheets found on pages 2 & 3 and distribute to each
student/group in the class. Suggestion: Copies should be made on cardstock.
2. Have students solve each problem and write the number of the problem on the flap that has the
correct solution(s).
3. Have students cut out the circles.
4. Fold the flaps.
5. Glue the flap containing the problem to the flap containing the correct solution.
