Pollution: Rachel Carson

Rachel Carson was a biologist born in 1907 who studied and investigated the effects of pesticides. She discovered that pesticides were poisoning animals and the environment. When pesticide companies denied the issues, Carson brought her findings to President Kennedy in 1963. Her work helped convince people to reduce pesticide use and support safer alternatives. The document also discusses soil pollution, the importance of soil for crops, and how individuals can help the environment by reducing pollution.

Pollution

Rachel Carson

Tarcau, Corrie
Rachel Carson
Rachel Carson was born May 27, 1907 and Died April 14, 1964. Rachel was
raised in Springdale, Pennsylvania and ever since she was little, she loved
the outdoors. When she got older, she decided she wanted to be a
scientist, but when she returned to college, she was going to be a biologist.
She thought that there was so much to learn about nature and loved the
outdoors ever since.

Soil Pollution

Soil is very important to our earth. We need soil for our crops to grow, but
if we don’t take care of our environment like littering, we won’t have
healthy crops. In 2012 the U.S. was the 2nd most carbonated place on
earth. Which means we should have tooken more care of earth.

Rachels Study

Rachel Carson studied biology, but what did she really prove? Soon people
invented some chemicals called pesticides. Rachel investigated these
chemicals and discovered that these chemicals weren’t only killing icky
bugs, they poisoned the animals who ate them too. Rachel told the
pesticide compony this, but they didn’t want people to stop buying the
pesticides, so they said she was lying. In May 1963, Rachel was invited to
talk to J.F.K. about pesticides. The Committee members were surprised
about Rachels thoughts and agreed that overusing pesticides was a
problem.
Soil Pollution Pesticides
What are pesticides? Pesticides are chemicals mainly used for killing bugs
and insects, but no one really knew what pesticides did. Pesticides are
made up of different poisons that kill bugs and insects, but when the other
animals eat the bugs, they get sick and die. The thing is it’s okay to use a
little bit of pesticide, it’s just not okay to use TONS of pesticides, but back
in the days people used tons and tons and tons and tons and tons of
pesticides. Luckily Rachel convinced people to use safer pesticides.

How Can We Help?

To help support our environment what can we do? We can definitely help
in only two ways. First you can try not to pollute the earth yourself. Then we
can help by picking up others pollution that has entered the environment.
This should help our earth feel better. Being responsible is a big task but try
to do your best.
What’s worse pollution or more pollution?
It’s really neither. Pollution is really bad, and
on the scale of one to ten how bad it is, it is
ten. In this project I will talk about a girl
named Rachel Carson, who helped with soil
pollution.
I liked learning about Rachel Carson. She put
a big impact on the earth. I’ll give you a hint
on my next project, famous artist.
