By Michael D. Jones Getting To The Stats/List Editor:: How To Plot Data On The TI-89 Titanium

1. This document provides instructions for plotting data and performing linear regression on a TI-89 Titanium graphing calculator. 2. It describes how to enter data into the calculator's Stats/List Editor, plot the data by assigning lists to the x and y-axes, and view the plotted data. 3. Additionally, it outlines the steps to calculate the linear regression of the data using the LinReg(ax+b) function, including storing the regression equation and viewing the regression line overlaid on the original plotted data.

How to plot data on the TI-89 Titanium

by Michael D. Jones

Getting to the Stats/List Editor:

1. Press [Home] to go to the Home screen.
2. Press the [Apps] button. This may be in an Icon format or a list.
3. Scroll down, using the arrow keys, to Stats/List Editor (in Icon mode it is 2
arrows down and 1 arrow over.)
Entering Data into the Stats/List Editor:
1. Once in the Editor several columns should appear. Make sure that these columns
are titled “list1”, “list2”, and so on. If they are not labled that, hit [F1] (Tools) and select
option 3: Setup Editor and hit [Enter]. A window will pop up. Hit [Enter] again.
2. Use the arrow keys to scroll over “list1” and down one. This will highlight the
first slot under list1, it may be blank. Hit [Enter] to begin entering data. After each
number press [Enter] and the calculator will automatically scroll down to the next entry.
Data entered into this list will be plotted along the X axis.
3. Repeat step 2 in “list2.” Data entered here will be plotted along the Y axis.
Plotting the Data:
1. When you have the data fully entered and are ready to plot it press [F2] (Plots)
and select 1: Plot Setup
2. A list of Plots should appear ranging from 1 to 9. If the plot is defined it will
display the lists that define it.
3. Press [F1] (Define) to define a Plot.
4. Options like “Plot Type” or “Mark” should appear. Plot Type should read
“Scatter”, Mark should read “Box.” If they do not, highlight these words and push the
[Right Arrow Key] to open a list of options. Select the appropriate option.
5. Two Options should be titled X and Y. Define these as “list1” and “list2”
respectively.
6. The Option “Use Freq and Categories?” should be “NO.” Do not worry about
faded options.
7. Hit [Enter] to define the Plot. This should return you to the Plot Setup screen and
“Plot:1” should have a little check mark beside it.
8. Press the Diamond Key and then [F1] (This is the key directly above the [Home]
key.) to enter the “Y=Editor.”
9. Press [F2] (Zoom) and scroll down to option 9: ZoomData. Press [Enter]. This
will automatically bring you to the graph and should display your data.
Plotting a Linear Regression:
1. Return to the Stats/List Editor, follow the steps under “Getting to the Stats/List
Editor.”
2. Press [F4] (Calc) and scroll down to “Regressions.”
3. Press the [Right Arrow Key] to open a list of possible Regressions the calculator
can perform.
4. Select “LinReg(ax+b)” This will fit a line to your data in the form of Y=mx+b.
Press [Enter].
5. Several options will appear including “X list” and “Y list.” Make sure that your
“X list” is defined as “list1” and that your “Y list” is defined as “list2”
6. An option “Store RegEqn to:” should lie below the “Y list” option. Make sure
this is defined as “y1(x).” WARNING: This will replace what ever you have in Y1=, if
you do not want to lose a previous function in the Y1= slot select a clear Y.
7. Do not worry about the options labled “Freq:”. “Category List:”, or “Include
Categories:” Leave them alone.
8. Press [Enter]
9. A window will pop up after a few seconds displaying values for a, b, r^2, and r.
r^2 and r are correlation factors, they should be close to 1 if you have a good fit. A line
that fits your data has already been entered into the calculator.
10. Press [Enter]
11. Press the Diamond Key and [F3] to view a graph with your data points plotted
and a line that fits that data.
12. To see the equation of the linear regression press Diamond Key and [F1], it is in
the Y= slot that you defined earlier.
