"EVERY CHILD IS SPECIAL"

Every child is special. Every child is a precious gift from up above. Every child has his own

characteristics and abilities. Every child has his own way of expressing what they want to do. They have

given such freedom to show the world what they got and not needing the expectations of others.

The movie, “Every Child is Special”, was all about an eight-year old boy named Ishaan Awasthi.

Ishaan was suffering from learning disabilities and seen a lazy and useless child by his family, especially his

father and also his teachers. Ishaan was indeed a talented child; his creativity skills are beyond what other

eight-year old child could possess. He had this special talent in painting using his wide imagination. But

sadly, his talent was being set aside because his teachers as well as parents can’t really understand him. They

only see Ishaan as a naughty boy who didn’t want to go to school; perhaps this comes to their mind for

other children could be at this situation like Ishaan. Ishaan is always being bullied not only in school but

also within their neighborhood. One day Ishaan's teacher punished him after he tittered during class

discussion; he sent Ishaan out and let him stand in the hallway. After what happened, Ishaan decided to cut

classes and wander the street alone, enjoying the wonderful yet mysterious sights in India. One day, the

teacher and principal talked to his parents. The principal conceives that there is something wrong with

Ishaan, well in fact that’s the truth but his parents can’t accept the fact and didn’t bother to take him into a

specialist. After finding out that Ishaan will be kicked out from his current school, his father decided to send

him into a boarding school where Ishaan's problem worsen. He suffered worse under his strict teachers.

Ishaan really felt so bad and it came to the point where he's already suffering from depression. He doesn’t

like to eat and sleep neither talk to anyone including his brother and mother.

Despite all the people who neglected Ishaan's case, here comes his hero in shining color, Mr. Ram

Shankar Nikumbh, school's temporary art teacher. Ram persistently helps Ishaan to his studies and his

personal life. Ram did a lot of things in order to catch the attention of the young boy and yes, he succeeded.

He did everything just to extrapolate what's wrong with Ishaan and finally find out the truth. Ram decided to
have a talk with Ishaan's parents and explained everything about Ishaan's case which lead into a learning

disorder called dyslexia; the reason why the young boy have difficulties in understanding numbers and

letters. Upon discovering the truth, Ram helped Ishaan in many ways as he could. First, Ishaan needs to

bring back his confidence in order to express himself well, so Ram boost Ishaan's self-confidence. Ram

thought Ishaan using different methods; he applied some games to his basic lessons in order for it to

become fun enough for Ishaan. He also gave Ishaan lessons in math, reading and writing. After all the hard

works of Ram, Ishaan is starting to improve in his studies. Now, he knows how to write properly, solve math

problems and still has a little trouble in reading but not as worst as before. In order to teach effectively, we

should accept first that not all our students are the same, some are good in math, some are good in English

and some are not good in math and English but possess wide range of imagination. Second, understand the

needs of each and every student; let them be who they really are. Don’t try to make a fish fly and a bird

swim. And lastly, always listen to your student's opinions and ponder from it.

I found the movie heart touching for it tackles the reality of being a child who is in need of special

love, care and understanding. Seeing a child, being judged by his own family is so heart breaking. Instead of

understanding the condition of Ishaan they managed to judge him and send him away not knowing how

painful for it for the young boy. Well, in today's generation we can't deny the fact that some of the parents

are pushing their children to get high scores, high grades and honors and that’s the real problem. They push

their children through their limits not knowing the capacity of the child and if the child can't comply with

what they want, they treat them as disappointments. But I can't blame the parents; maybe they have their

own reasons why they do such act towards their children. The movie is such a lesson for the parents,

teachers as well as fellowmen who have encountered the same child as Ishaan. It shows the concept of not

giving up even how difficult the situation could be, helping others within our reach, and understanding the

real concept of human as a unique entity. For me, this movie is the best example for the quote, "don’t judge

the book by its cover". Children like Ishaan are artworks; we really need a thorough understanding and

infinite understanding in order for us to appreciate their real beauty.
