CHAPTER 1

The Problem and its Background

Introduction

Peer pressure is commonly applied to younger people, especially those

teenagers. Responding to peer pressure is part of human nature that some

teenagers are more likely to give in, and others are better able to resist and stand

the ground. Peer pressure is one thing that all teens have in common. Some can

not escape it because it is almost everywhere. Peer pressure is defined as the way

that people of the same social group can influence on

another individual to take a certain action, adopt certain values, or otherwise

conform in order to be accepted.

Teens are very quick and accurate in making judgments and decisions on

teenagers own desision and in situations where have time to think. However, when

have to make decisions in the heat of the moment or in social situations, peers

decisions are often influenced by external factors like peers. In a study funded by

the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), teen volunteers played a video driving

game, either alone or with friends watching. What the researchers discovered was

that the number of risks teens took in the driving game more than doubled when

friends were watching as compared to when the teens played the game alone. This

outcome indicates that teens may find it more difficult to control impulsive or risky
behaviors when friends are around, or in situations it can emotionally charge. It can

also have a positive effect. Friends often encourage each other, encourage others

to do worst and can also encourage to do good. A teen might join a volunteer

project because all of his or her friends are doing it, or get good grades because

the social group he or she belongs to thinks getting good grades is important. A

positive peer group can help boost her self-esteem. It might prevent her from

engaging in harmful or risky behaviors.

In this way, peer influence can lead teens to engage in new activities that

can help build strong pathways in the brain. As described in the article, “Teens and

Decision Making: What Brain Science Reveals”, neural connections that are weak

or seldom used are removed during adolescence through a process called

synaptic pruning, allowing the brain to redirect precious resources toward more

active connections. This means that teens have the potential, through teens

choices and the behaviors engage in, to shape own brain development. Therefore,

skill-building activities such as those physical, learning, and creative endeavors

that teens are often encouraged to try through positive peer influence not only

provide stimulating challenges, but can simultaneously build strong pathways in

the brain.

While the researchers constantly influenced by those around us because

most young people spend large amounts of time with teens But still it is up to us to

decide to act or not to act.So when it comes to decision making, the choice is up

to you. For instances an individual tempted to take drugs, teens who have been
armed with information of what drug use can do to the body, mind and spirit through

a good Drug Awareness Program, are less likely to give in to the pressure than

those who have not been educated on the harms it can cause.

Looking at the modern society, most of the teenagers are not aware with

the pressure can experience together with peers; most especially when teens

already feel that peers are belong in the group. Teenagers need to

be conscious with the consequences of choosing people to be with. Teenagers

need to be guided and have the knowledge to critically deal with the matter of peer

pressure.

Instead of watching teenagers suffer from peer pressure, this paper may

help to have considerations and idea on guiding with the right path. This paper

focuses on the effects brought by peer pressure on teenagers in building

personality and academic performance.Peer pressure is the influence exerted by

a peer group or an individual encouraging other individuals to change attitudes,

values or behaviors in order to conform to group norms.(Treynor, 2009)

Social groups affected include membership groups in which individuals are

formally members and in which membership is not clearly defined. Among adults,

it is considered a rare phenomenon, though with the increasing competition for

resources and personal progress, adult peer pressure is an emerging area of

interest.Peer pressure is not always a bad thing because peer groups can actually

have a very positive influence on individual's behavior. For some adults, a peer

group can be a source of security, a learning opportunity and a source of

encouragement among others. The difference between negative and positive peer

pressure is the impact it has on the person. While most forms of influence don't

necessarily feel comfortable for the person on the receiving end, the outcomes of

the influence are likely to be mostly positive.

Positive peer pressure results in a person feeling better, healthier or happier.

Negative peer pressure on the other hand, results in people feeling unhappy,

unwell or uncomfortable.People give in to peer pressure because teens want to be

accepted and fit in a group.Conformity may create problems when peers influence

each other to participate in deviant activities.Despite the risk, peer groups remain

a very essential part of an individual because teens have several benefits to an

individual. Peer group is a safe place to meet like-minded individuals, allows one

to take positive risks and test out values and opinions of others, test out peers

strengths and limitations, feel safe and boost self-confidence, explore new and

positive things including music, other interesting activities, feel understood and

accepted by others going through the same phase and improve the ability to make

personal choices.

Significance of the Study

The Researchers choose these respondents who will benefit this study.

Students-This research paper would be able to help students to carefully choose

people to be with.Students can be able to be guided in choosing the group to be

fit in.students need to critically think where should go and what way wanted to

be.This research paper aims to help most specially students because peers are

the one who are being affected with this issue.

Parents-Parents can have the idea of the issue that child was going

through.Parents can be able to have the idea of the proper way of parenting so

that teenagers would be able to take chances of doing right things together with

peers.

Teachers-Teachers should encourage the students to mingle with all students

specially does who are not able to concentrate in studies. So that, there would not

be any chance of displaying any antisocial behavior.Teachers should analyse the

root cause of the problem and should motivate peers and the positive manner for

development.

Administration-Administrators must have the knowledge about peer relationship

of the school students.Help to overcome the negative impact of peer pressure.

Future Researchers-This study can be a source of information for the future

researchers specially this study is widely discuss yet, society is not really aware

and conscious about this issue.Researchers can be a way to let people know the

importance of having knowledge about peer pressure.

Theoretical Framework

Peer cluster Theory

A new psychosocial model, peer cluster theory, suggests that the

socialization factors that accompany adolescent development interact to produce

peer clusters that encourage drug involvement or provide sanctions against drug

use. These peer clusters are small, very cohesive groupings that shape a great

deal of adolescent behavior, including drug use. Peer cluster theory suggests that

other socialization variables, strength of the family, family sanctions against drug

use, religious identification, and school adjustment influence drug use only

indirectly, through effect on peer clusters. Correlations of these socialization

variables wording drug use confirm the importance of socialization characteristics

as underlying factors in drug use and also confirm that other socialization factors

influence drug use through the effect on peer drug associations. Peer cluster

theory suggest that treatment of the drug-abusing youth must alter the influence of

the peer cluster or it is likely to fail. Prevention programs aimed at the family,

school, or religion must also influence peer clusters, or drug use will probably not

be reduced. (Dennis M. Kivlighan, Jr. 2016)

study that talks about Implication of peer pressure towards the academic

performance of SHS students in AMACC Caloocan campus. The input of the

research paradigm, talks about nature and background of peer pressure while in

the process of research paradigm states the process on gathering data like

preparing a letter of approval and conducting a survey. At the last part of the

research paradigm, it talks about handling and overcome of peer pressure.

Statement of the Problem

The focused of this study are the implications of Peer pressure towards the

Academic performance of Grade 11 and 12 students in AMACC Caloocan in

second semester in the S.Y 2018-2019. It answers the following specific questions.

1.How Peer Pressure affects the academic performance of students.

2. What are the major factors that trigger peer pressure among students.
2.1 Influence
2.2 School activities
2.3 Surroundings
2.4 Problems

3.What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Peer Pressure towards the

students.

4.How students handle Peer Pressure.

5.How students overcome Peer Pressure.

Scope and Limitation

This Study focuses on the factors considered by the teenagers in dealing

with peer pressure. This study will no longer discuss other matters of peer pressure

and also the cases and sensitive issues involving peer pressure. This is also to

give emphasis to the pressure that the teenagers will encounter during the maturity

and possible experience. This study will only focus on students who experience

Peer Pressure.
