30% by Weight in A Random 2D Pattern. The Modulus of The: Quiz Composite Home

The document provides information about a composite material containing 64% volume fraction of carbon fibers with a tensile strength of 450,000 psi and modulus of 32,000,000 psi within an epoxy matrix with a tensile strength of 8,200 psi and modulus of 350,000 psi. Using the rule of mixtures, it asks to estimate the upper strength and modulus expected for this composite.

----------
In carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy composite, the tensile strength and modulus of the epoxy are
8,200 psi and 350,000 psi, respectively. The carbon fiber has tensile strength and modulus of
450,000 psi and 32,000,000 psi, respectively. The composite contains 64 volume % of
continuous fibers aligned uniaxially. Assume the composite is virtually free of voids.Estimate the
upper strength and modulus of the composite expected in this composite using the rule of
mixtures.
---------
You wish to select the appropriate fiber to reinforce a thermoset polymer. Given the information
in the following table, you wish for there to be minimal residual stresses in the part upon cooling
from cure (175oC) to room (20oC) temperatures, select and a fiber. The composite is a
unidirectional with 60 volume % fiber, and you should only consider the properties along the
fiber direction.

You have a polypropylene resin that is filled with an E-glass filler at

30% by weight in a random 2D pattern. The modulus of the
polypropylene is 200,000 psi and a yield strength of 2,000 psi. The glass
fibers are 10 microns in diameter, have a modulus of 10,000,000 psi, and
an ultimate fracture strength of 250,000 psi. The specific gravity of the
glass fiber is 2.5 and of the polypropylene is 0.91. Determine the
modulus of this composite.

Once you have determine the modulus:

A supplier claims to have a nano-clay filled polypropylene resin
(specific density = 0.93) that allows you to use only 10% by weight
fibers and get the same modulus as a neat resin with 30% by volume
glass fiber (see above). Determine the modulus of this nano-clay filled
polypropylene.

A composite has the following material properties:

EL = 11.773 Msi, ET = 5.162 Msi, EZ = 1.53 Msi
GLT = 2.479 Msi, GLZ = 0.64 Msi, GTZ = 0.57 Msi
νLT = 0.401, νLZ = 0.22, νTZ = 0.29
where the subscript L, T and Z are the Longitudinal, transverse and normal
directions (orthogonal system), E is the Modulus of Elasticity, G is the Shear
Modulus and v is the Poisson's Ratio.
The composite is loaded with planar stresses in the plane LT as follows:
L=10000psi
T=25000psi
LT=2000psi
Calculate the strains in all directions of the composite.
Answers in microns and in the following order:
L , T , Z , TZ , LZ , LT
