DEDICATED TO THE MARTYRS OF 1857

The nation that has no consciousness of its past has no future. Equally
true it is that a nation must develop its capacity not only of claiming a
past, but also of knowing how to use it for the furtherance of its future.
MANGAL PANDAY, the first martyr of the
struggle. He kissed the scaffold at Barrackpore
on 8th May, 1857, gave not only his blood, but
his sacred name also to the Revolution and
inspired every soldier.

RANI LAKSHMIBAI OF JHANSI. Her name has

become a byword in bravery. With the slogan,
" I will not give Jhansi" she assumed the
leadership of the Revolution. She is one of the
few women-warriors. Her chivalry has been
sung in many songs over the years.

NANA SAHIB PESHWA was the moving spirit

behind the Revolution. A great organiser and
warrior, his disappearance from India and his
end are one of the unsolved mysteries of
history.
BEGUM ZINAT MAHAL, the Queen of Delhi. A
determined Begum, she inspired her husband to
join the revolution wholeheartedly. She
accompanied him to Burma when the latter was
sentenced to transportation to life.

With the British victory, the emperor's two

other sons were shot for supporting the rebels;
however, her son did not become heir.

AZIMULLAH KHAN, the trusted and valiant

counselor of Nana Sahib. He rose from the low
station of a menial servant by his industry and
ability. Become military officer and stood,
shoulder to shoulder with his master.

MAULVI AHMEDA SHAH When victory by open

war become unlikely he took to guerilla
warfare from Bari to Bitaoli with a view to
drive the British out of Oudh.
Maulavi was the only one who could have
dared to defeat Sir Colin Campbell twice. The
British could never catch Maulvi alive. The
price of 50,000 pieces of silver was announced
to capture him. Finally the king of Powayan
Raja Jagannath Singh killed Maulvi with
treachery, beheaded and presented his head
to the magistrate. Raja Jagannath was paid
announced price for his treachery. Next day,
the head of Maulvi was hanged at Kotwali.
KING BAHADUR SHAH ZAFAR The
revolutionaries rolled around him and declared
him the sovereign of Hindusthan at Delhi.

TATIA TOPE - Commander-in-Chief of Peshwa.

Nana Sahib was a great military genius and a
fighter. When sentenced to death, he mocked
and mounted the scaffold with as much
firmness as handcuffs would allow him and put
his head into the noose.
