The key takeaways are that Automotive SPICE is a standard for automotive software processes, ISO 26262 provides functional safety guidelines, and there is a difference between assessing individual processes versus assessing an entire organization.

Automotive SPICE is a framework derived from the international SPICE standards for assessing automotive software development processes and capabilities.

ISO 26262 provides functional safety standards and guidelines for automotive systems to ensure safety of electronic and electrical systems in road vehicles. It aims to avoid unreasonable risk caused by hazards resulting from malfunctioning behavior of electrical and/or electronic systems.

Introduction
Software Process Improvement and Capability dEtermination (SPICE) is an international
standard (15504) prepared with collaboration of experts from several industries (SPICE User
Group)
➢ “International Standard” compared to “Private” CMMI
➢ To provide legal standing in disputes and claims
➢ To evaluate/award suppliers in increasingly complex Software Systems

Automotive Special Interest Group (SIG) (Group of Automotive OEMs, the Procurement Forum
and the SPICE User Group.) created Automotive SPICE® by adopting SPICE for automotive
industry.

From Automotive SPCIE version 3.0 onwards, it is being maintained by the VDA-QMC. VDA is a
German consortium of automotive companies, QMC is an institute; part of VDA.

Introduction cont..
Assessment is an activity undertaken to evaluate project’s and/or organization’s processes
against a process assessment model.
An Assessment Scheme is a published framework to regulate all aspects of assessments;
including assessor qualification, assessment process, methods & guidelines, compliance to
standards, etc.

International Assessor Certification Scheme (INTACS)TM is the official scheme recognized by

VDA for Automotive SPICE® assessments and assessor qualification.

International Registration Scheme for Assessors (IntRSA) is the scheme managed by the
SPICE User Group.

PATHFINDER® is an independent assessment scheme for organizational maturity

assessments in conformance to Automotive SPICE® and ISO/IEC 15504.
