MODULE E
1.Describe the uses of a charge controller.
A charge controller is basically connected to a PV module to convert a DC current and voltage to a value which can be taken by the electronic equipment connected to PV module. So, it basically regulates the current and voltage to prevent the overcharging and discharging of PV module and connected devices. Apart from this it prevent energy to be fed back into the solar panels. 2.Identify the components that can be connected to a charge controller. Input equipment includes: 1. Wires 2. Disconnect equipment 3. Combiner box Output equipment includes: 1. Inverters 2. Battery system 3. Other selected loads 4. Over current protection.
3.Describe the operating limitations of charge controllers.
The older models of charge controllers just monitor the voltage of battery and opens the circuit when the voltage reaches the certain level. PWM is more complex but does not have any mechanical connections to break. Using an MPPT controller forces the solar array to be comprised of like PV modules in like strings. 4.Describe MPPT and its advantages. MPPT is fundamentally an algorithm which encourages the solar module to extricate greatest accessible power by causing them to work at maximum voltage and ambient conditions. It looks at the voltage delivered by the solar panel and compare it to the battery voltage and after that changes over it to most extreme voltage to get greatest current into battery. 5.Describe how the CEC (Canadian Electrical Code) relates to the charge controller as being continuous duty. According to the CEC, in any condition the load which is connected to the charge should always be able to do the work and it should not be less than the rated power. 6.Describe the relation between the charge controller and the inverter. Inverters converts DC current from batteries to useful AC current and converts AC current to DC current that can charge deep cycle batteries. Charge controller sends power only in one direction which charges the deep cycle batteries from the solar modules and prevents the currents to drain back to PV modules.
