JINDAL Drilling & Industries of India, having just approved a restructuring and
merger process that has more than doubled its size, is pursuing international
partnerships to fulfill its aggressive expansion plans.
In a board meeting on 25 August, a demerger of Jindal’s casing subsidiary
Haraya Engineering was confirmed, while two other entities owned by parent DP
Jindal Group — drilling services units Newsco Newtech and Discovery
Hydrocarbons — have been merged into Jindal Drilling.
“We are now two-and-a-half times our earlier size,” said Manav Kumar, a senior
manager at Jindal Drilling and son of company managing director Naresh Kumar.
“Our prospects are now much better, and we’re getting aggressive in the
international market.”
The company manages a pair of Noble jack-up rigs on longterm charter to India’s Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). It
also has two 350-foot jack-ups of its own being built at Keppel Fels in Singapore and due for delivery in the third and fourth
quarters of 2008. Jindal is now hoping to expand its operating experience into semi-submersibles and drillships in a bid to
gain a slice of the deepwater market, though it realises it will need to do so through partnerships with experienced hands.
The younger Kumar is also director of another DP Jindal Group company, Discovery Enterprises — an offshore support
services outfit with big growth ambitions of its own.
Discovery’s claim to fame thus far is its alliance with Norwegian shipowner Seatankers on the fiveyear, $183 million charter
of the Crystal Sea mini-floating production, storage and offloading vessel to ONGC for use on the Bombay High North field.
Though start-up from the field has been delayed several months due to a fault with the FPSO’s import riser, Kumar said he
expects first oil to flow “by the end of October”, after the end of the monsoon season.
Discovery is now pursuing entry into new markets, including supply vessels, anchor handlers, offshore construction and
liquefied natural gas vessels, hoping to forge alliances with established foreign players keen to gain a foothold in the fast-
expanding Indian market.

Jindal Drilling Re-lists at a Premium on Indian Stock Exchanges
RIGZONE.COM ARTICLE Tuesday, January 02, 2007
Jindal Drilling & Industries Ltd, (a DP Jindal Group Company) a major offshore drilling contractor
in India, has recently completed financial restructuring to chart out strategic future growth. The
company has successfully completed the merger of the group entities in the similar business and
has effected de-merger of its other entities, which gives them a focused approach on its core area
of drilling.
With the bullish analysis by major analysts, the company's stock of face value INR 10.00 (US$0.22)
was re-listed back on Indian stock exchanges on December 22, 2006 at a value of INR
655(US$14.55) and touched the intraday high of INR 702($15.6).
The Board approved to pay a dividend of 25% on equity shares in its annual general meeting held
on December 15, 2006.
The Company is currently operating two jackup rigs on long-term contracts for the national oil
company, ONGC Ltd. The company is further executing six directional drilling contracts
(MWD&SDMM) and also operating various mud logging units for E&P companies. There are also
plans to branch out in the area of deepwater operations and also work over rigs.
The Group has also committed US$350mn for the construction of TWO 350/400’ IC jackup rigs at
Keppel shipyard in Singapore, coming out in Sep 2008 and Nov 2008, respectively, and are
available for contracts worldwide.
Being one of the oldest premium drilling contractors of India, the company has rich experience in
the field of offshore drilling and has enormous prospects in India where the energy scenario is
more vibrant than ever due to string of several huge finds by E&P companies, like Cairn Energy,
Reliance and ONGC, etc.
