The Effect of The Types of Water To The Tomato Plant

The document summarizes an experiment that tested the effect of different types of water (rain water vs tap water) on the growth rate of tomato plants. The experiment involved growing tomato plants in two containers, one watered with rain water and one with tap water. The tomato plant watered with rain water showed a slightly faster growth rate based on weekly height measurements over 5 weeks. The study concluded that rain water carries more benefits for tomato plants than tap water.

The effect of the types of water

to the tomato plant

Our study aims to give not just us but also gardeners who
wants to have a plant that is fast in terms of growing and
producing food and in the container because in our study we use
the method of container gardening in planting tomatoes since
container gardening is very suitable for us, people who wants to
start gardening but have limited space or time. This also gives us
more control on moisture, temperature and sunlight which helps
the plant grow faster.

Statement of the Problem

Will the type of water affect the growth rate of tomato plant?

Hypothesis

If we will use rain water, then the tomato plant will grow
faster.

Related Studies

In our method of planting, we will need at least 24 inch

container for the tomato plant to have enough space to grow
since tomato plant can grow 6 - 8 feet tall and 2 feet across.
Planting tomato seeds in containers is easier and more
beneficial than any other methods but there are rules that you
need to follow such as keeping the tomato plant well watered
because of our weather now especially if the weather is hot
summer so better use large containers such as big pots, pet
bottles and sacks because the roots will grow since it has more
space which is good for tomato plant because tomatoes can grow
6 - 8 feet tall and 2 feet across.

Tomato Plant is a great type of plant and grows fast but we

should not depend on it, we should still take care of it by watering
it in the early morning because this gives plant the moisture it
needs to make it through a hot day and avoid watering late
afternoon or evening, Water generously the first few days, and
water it well throughout the growing season, about 2 inches per
week during the summer. Water deeply for a strong root system.
Aside from that we also use garden soil because it increase
nutrient content, ward off plant diseases, and improve soil
structure. In fact, according to the University of Illinois Extension,
soil structure refers to the way inorganic particles, such as sand,
silt and clay, combine with decayed organic particles, like humus
and compost. These things are very important because there are
some diseases that destroys the plant such as Mosaic Virus. This
creates distorted leaves and causes young growth to be narrow
and twisted, and theleaves become mottled with yellow.
Unfortunately, infected plants should be destroyed (but don’t put
them in your compost pile).

For the tomato plant to grow faster, the container where it

was planted should be place where it will get 6 hours of full sun or
better yet 8 or more hours. You can also use sun calculator or
check the tomato plant day by day to have control on it since
container gardening gives you more control on your plant.

Experimental Design

This study is limited to the determination of the effect of two types

of water which is the rain and tap water to the tomato plant.

Set Up A (This set up will answer our problem and prove

our hypothesis)
Independent Variable: Type of water (tap water)

Dependent Variable: Growth Rate of the plant (tomato

plant)

Control Variable: Size of the container, location of tomato plant,

type of plant

Set Up B

Independent Variable: Type of water (rain water)

Dependent Variable: Growth Rate of the plant (tomato plant)

Control Variable: Size of the container, location of tomato plant,

type of plant

Materials:

 2 1.5 Liter Selecta Ice Cream Container

 20 Tomato Seeds
 Garden Soil
 Shovel
 250 Milliliter of Rain and Tap Water (per day)
 Soldering Iron
 Scissors or Cutter
 Ruler
Procedure:

1.) Gather the materials

2.) Label the containers as rain water and the other
container as tap water.
3.) Put 12 holes on each container using a soldering
iron.
4.) Put garden soil in each container using a shovel.
5.) Dig a hole of ¼ inches deep on the soil of each
container.
6.) Put 10 seeds of tomato on each of the holes in
the container.
7.) Cover the holes that you made on each container
using a shovel.
8.) Water the container labeled as rain water with
rain water and the container labeled as tap water with
tap water.
9.) Place the container outside the JHS building.
10.) Measure the height of both set - ups using a ruler
per week and record it on a data table.

Data Analysis
According to the data presented, our hypothesis which is, if we
will use rain water, then the tomato plant will grow faster is right. It
shows in our data table that in the first five weeks, our
experimental group which is the set - up B grew taller, and
healthier than our controlled variable which is set - up A but the
height in cm of set - up B is not that far compared to set - up A.
This is because we used rainwater in set - up B and according to
my research, tomatoes are 95 percent water, with most varieties
soaking up summer rains to become pump and juicy on the vine.
This means that rain water is better to use in tomato plant than
tap water.

Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5

Set – Up A 2 cm 7 cm 10.4 cm 12 cm 15 cm

Set – Up B 3 cm 9 cm 12.9 cm 14 cm 16.4 cm

Conclusion

After doing our Science Investigatory Project (SIP), we have

concluded that rain water is better to use in tomato plant
compared to tap water since rain water carried more benefits than
tap water. But looking at the photo of our tomato plants, it is very
obvious that our controlled group is taller than our experimental
group, this is because our controlled group is more recent than
our experimental group. Rain water is also beneficial to other
plants, not just to tomato plant. We also concluded that this
project is very important not just to us but also to other people.
