Revision Exercise Hypothesis Testing

The document describes several hypothesis tests related to quality control processes. It includes: 1) A test of whether a new pain relief tablet works twice as fast as a competitor's product, with hypotheses that the null is the new product works at 0.5 times the competitor's rate and the alternative is it works faster. 2) Tests of whether the mean distance traveled by a new synthetic oil and the proportion of detonators that ignite explosives meet specifications, including calculating P-values and confidence intervals. 3) A test of whether the diameter of bolts produced by two machines meet specifications, and whether one machine produces significantly larger bolts than the other. Confidence intervals are also constructed. 4)

REVISION EXERCISE

Consider the hypothesis test as follows:

H o :   1.5 versus H1 :   1.5
Output of the analysis is given in TABLE Q4.

TABLE Q4

n Mean 95% CI Test p – value

statistics
36 1.4975 [1.4942, 1.5008]? -1.5? 0.1336?

By assuming the standard deviation to be 0.01, find the missing values

in TABLE Q4 and draw your conclusion.
[7 marks]

b. A manufacturer of a new pain relief tablet would like to demonstrate that

his product works twice as fast as the competitor’s product. The
manufacturer would like to test:

H o : 1  0.52 versus H1 : 1  0.52

where and  are the mean relief time of the manufacturer’s product
and the competitor’s product, respectively. Assume that both population
variances are known.

i. Develop a procedure for testing the above hypotheses.

[7 marks]
ii. Other than the procedure in part (a)(i), develop two other testing
procedures that could be used to test the above hypotheses.
[6 marks]
2. a. Suppose that 100 litres of a new synthetic oil made by a certain
manufacturer lasted on the average 34910.4km with a standard
deviation of 20172km.

i. Is there evidence to support that the mean distance less than

35200km at the 0.05 level of significance?
ii. What is the P-value for this test? Comment.

b In a study designed to investigate whether certain detonators used with

explosives in coal mining meet the requirement that at least 90% will
ignite the explosive when charge. The study found that 174 of 200
detonators function properly.

i. Test the null hypothesis, p=0.90 against the alternative

hypothesis p  0.90 at the 0.05 level of significance.
ii. Find the P-value for this test and comment.
iii. Construct a 95% two-sided CI on the true proportion of
detonators. Explained how this CI can be used to test the
hypothesis in part (i).
3. As a quality engineer, you had inspected two types of machines, namely Machine A
and Machine B. The product from each of the machine is assumed to meet the
specification, that is, the mean diameter of the produced bolts is 35.5 mm. A random
sample is selected from each machine and its diameter is measured. The results are
shown in TABLE Q3.

TABLE Q3
Machine A 36 28 29 20 38
Machine B 34 41 35 47 49 46

Assume that the samples were collected from population of equal variances.

a. Your superior feels that Machine B does not meet the specification. Is there strong
evidence to indicate that this claim is true? Justify your answer.
[8 marks]
b. Carry out a test to decide if the mean diameter of bolts from Machine B is bigger
than the mean diameter of bolts produced by Machine A. Use 
[8 marks]
c. Construct a 95% confidence interval on the difference in means, 1   2 between
the two types of machine. Comment on your answer.

4.An experiment was conducted to investigate how the corrosion properties of chilled cast
iron depend upon the chromium content of alloy. A collection of 12 samples of chilled cast
iron with 0.1% chromium content provided corrosion rates with sample mean of 2.462 and
a standard deviation of 0.315. Another collection of 13 samples of chilled cast iron with
0.2% of chromium content provided corrosion rates with a sample mean of 2.296 and
standard deviation equals 0.297.
(i) Conduct a hypothesis test to investigate if there is any evidence that the
chromium content has an effect on the corrosion rate of chilled cast iron.

(ii) Determine the 99% confidence interval for the difference between the
average corrosion rates of chilled cast iron at the two chromium contents.
