Chapter 1, text 1
Sun Yue and Wang Jing chat about Wang Jing's boyfriend.
Sun Yue: I heard that your boyfriend, Li Jin and you are at the same school, are you classmates?
Wang Jing: Yes, he is studying news, I am studying law, he and I are not in the same class.
Sun Yue: How did you two meet?
Wang Jing: We met during a football match. My class was playing against his class, he himself scored
2 goals, my impression of him was deep, afterwards I slowly got to know him.
Sun Yue: Why do you like him?
Wang Jing: Not only does he play football well, but his character is not bad either.

Chapter 1, text 2
Wang Jing chats with teacher Li about her wanting to get married.
Wang Jing: Teacher Li, next month on the 5th, I'm going to get married.
Teacher Li: You're kidding, aren't you? Haven't you known each other for just a month?
Wang Jing: Even though the time we have known each other isn't long, I have never been so happy.
Teacher Li: For 2 people to be together, they had better have interests and hobbies in common.
Wang Jing: We have a lot of hobbies in common, we often play ball together, sing and cook.
Teacher Li: It seems you really found someone to suit you. I wish you to be happy!
*****************
Chapter 1, text 3
Teacher Gao and Teacher Li talk about life after marriage.
Teacher Gao: I heard you have been married to your wife for almost 20 years?
Teacher Li: On the 9th June, we will have been married for exactly 20 years. So many years, our life
has always been very happy.
Teacher Gao: When my husband and I had just got married, every day felt novel, speaking together
without end. But now...
Teacher Li: For 2 people to share a life, only romance and novelty is not enough.
Teacher Gao: Yes, you're right! Now, every day I notice all of his shortcomings.
Teacher Li: When 2 people are together for a long time, there are many problems. Only by excepting
his shortcomings, can you live together better.

Chapter 1, text 4
Many girls admire romantic love. So what is romance? Young people say: Romance is when she
wants the moon, you don't give her the stars [ie, she wants the moon so you give her the moon];
middle aged people say: romance is even if you work overtime until midnight, when you go home,
the lights are still on in your own home [ie someone is waiting up for you]; old people say: romance
is actually like the words of that song "I can think of nothing more romantic than to slowly grow old
with you". In fact, the thing that touches us, is the simple love in life. Sometimes, simplicity is the
greatest happiness.
*****************
Chapter 1, text 5
When speaking of marriage, people naturally think of love. Love is an important reason for marriage,
but for 2 people to share a life, not only do they need romantic love, but they also need mutually
attracted personalities.
My husband is a humorous person. Even if it is a common subject, from his mouth it can change into
something interesting [he can make it sound interesting]. When I'm sad, he always has a way to
cheer me up. And [furthermore] his temper is not bad either, we have been married almost 10
years, we almost never have something to fight about, many people are especially envious of us.
*****************
Chapter 2, text 1
Xiao Xia and Mark talk about Mark's Chinese friend
Xiao Xia: [You] came to China almost a year ago, have you got used to the life [here]?
Mark: In the beginning, [I was] not very used to it, afterwards, I slowly got used to it, recently, I also
made a Chinese friend.
Xiao Xia: That's good, tell me about the new Chinese friend you made.
Mark: We met at the library. Usually we (often) look at books together, go shopping and play
football. Sometimes he also sends me funny text messages.
Xiao Xia: This friend of yours is really not bad! How about next time you introduce us to each other?
Mark: No problem! [You're] just in time [ie how fortunate!], this afternoon we are going to play
football, you can come [with us].
*****************
Chapter 2, text 2
Xiao Li and Xiao Lin talk about the class reunion.
Xiao Li: On Sunday we are having a student party [class reunion], can you come?
Xiao Lin: I can come. How are you doing with contacting classmates? How many are coming?
Xiao Li: Almost half, Zhang Yuan is also flying in especially, from abroad.
Xiao Lin: Really? We graduated almost 10 years ago, I really miss everyone! By the way, early this
morning I ran into Wang Jing at the underground station, after graduating, she went to Shanghai for
work, this time she has come to visit.
Xiao Li: That's wonderful! Sorry to bother you but could you contact her and invite her to attend the
student party. The party will be at the restaurant (the one) at the university entrance, at half past
six. Don't be late!
Xiao Lin: Don't worry about it. See you Sunday at six thirty!
*****************
Chapter 2, text 3
Sun Yue and Wang Jing chat about their friends.
Sun Yue: When was this photo taken? You (look) really young!
Wang Jing: This is a photo from when I was at university. As soon as I look at this photo, I remember
those happy days in the past, as if once again I was back on campus.
Sun Yue:The person beside you must be your best friend, isn't it? Do you still keep in contact now?
Wang Jing: Of course, even though we graduated so many years ago, we still often keep in contact,
every time we talk endlessly.
Sun Yue: I really envy you! When I was at university my best friend went south to work, we have
already been out of contact for a long time. I will give her a phone call in a little while.
Wang Jing: Ok. You have to know that, to have a true friend, is to have a real relationship, it's so
hard!
*****************
Chapter 2, text 4
Everyone needs friends, friends can enrich our lives. To leave friends [away from friends], our lives
can certainly become very boring. So, how can we make more friends? Of course, you must have a
good temper. Although a bad‐tempered person may not make people dislike them, it makes it
harder for them to make friends (with people). Because no one would like to be with someone who
always gets angry easily. We still have to frequently communicate with people around us.
Communication can let people understand each other, if they have common interests, hobbies or
customs, they can become friends more easily.
*****************
Chapter 2, text 5
Throughout a person's life, they may have nothing, but they cannot have no friends [ie they may
never aquire anything but they must at least have friends], moreover, they must have their own true
friends. What is a true friend? Different people can have different understandings. Some people
think a friend is someone who they can be happy with, some people think a friend should be like a
mirror, they can help them observe their shortcomings. While my understanding is: just at the
moment when you encounter difficulties, a true friend will stand by your side, help you in time;
when you are bored or sad, a true friend can accompany you by your side and think of ways to make
you feel happy.

Chapter 3, text 1
Xiao Xia: How was your interview this morning?
Xiao Yu: Not too bad [acceptable], the questions they asked were quite easy, I was just a bit nervous.
Xiao Xia: During an interview, you must be confident in yourself and believe in your abilities.
Xiao Yu: Yes, you're right! At 8 o'clock am on the 15th March, at the school gym, there will also be a
recruitment meeting [job fair], will you go?
Xiao Xia: I still haven't decided.
Xia Yu: I heard that this job fair will offer many job opportunities, we should go there together and
take a look.
*****************
Chapter 3, text 2
Manager Ma: Xiao Lin, Xiao Li is in charge of this recruitment, isn't he?
Xiao Lin: Originally Xiao Li was the one in charge of it, but he suddenly took ill and was hospitalised,
therefore I was given the job to do.
Manager Ma: Oh, were there many people who applied for the job this time?
Xiao Lin: Manager, a total of 15 people came to apply this time. After going through a written test
and an interview, there are 2 [candidates] who are pretty good. These are their details (data), please
take a look.
Manager Ma: The abilities of these 2 people quite meet our requirements. Inform them to come to
my office next Monday at 9 in the morning.
Xiao Lin: Ok, then I will contact them immediately.
*****************
Chapter 3, text 3
Xiao Lin: Wang Jing, long time no see! After graduating university, we didn't keep in contact, where
do you work now?
Wang Jing: As soon as I graduated, I went to Shanghai to become a lawyer.
Xiao Lin: You must be very satisfied with your current job, isn't that so?
Wang Jing: I like my current job, because I majored in law, furthermore, my co‐workers like me.
Beside, the income isn't bad.
Xiao Lin: This Sunday our classmates are getting together, can you come?
Wang Jing: I can come. Even though this time that I've come to Beijing, my schedule is tight, I must
take this opportunity to see everyone again.
*****************
Chapter 3, text 4
During the meeting, the manager's impresson of me was good, he also informed me that I can start
work tomorrow. I really didn't think that looking for a job would go so smoothly. You want to know
what you need to pay attention to in an interview? Firstly, you must wear formal clothes, this will
leave the interviewer with a good impression, let him think you are a serious person. Secondly, when
applying, don't be nervous. When answering questions, don't speak too quickly, also your voice
shouldn't be too soft, believe you have the ability to do well. Of course, the most important thing is
to answer the questions honestly.
*****************
Chapter 3, text 5
The first impression is the one left the first time you meet someone. Although the first impression is
not always the right one, however if you want to change it, it is very difficult. Other people's first
impression of you can influence their feelings and judgements towards you in the future. So, leave a
good impression on colleagues when you meet them for the first time, future work might go more
smoothly [better]; leave a good impression on clients/customers when you meet for the first time,
you may be able to sell even more things. However, if when meeting for the first time, someone
leaves the bad impression of not being punctual, then in the future, it will be very difficult for people
to trust you. Therefore, no matter whether it is at school, at work or for an appointment/date with
someone, punctuality is very important.
*****************
Chapter 4, text 1
Xiao Lin and Xiao Li talk about Xiao Li's job
Xiao Lin: I heard you have changed jobs again, haven't you? You have already changed jobs 3 times
this year, haven't you?
Xiao Li: Don't mention it! I believe the new job is better than the previous one, I didn't expect to not
yet have a better job than before.
Xiao Lin: You left that job after working there only 2 months, actually, you need 1 year to completely
adapt to a new job, therefore, frequently changing jobs is not necessarily a good thing.
Xiao Li: I also understand this. But the income at that job was too little!
Xiao Lin: You have just arrived at the new company, don't be too anxious to earn money, learning is
the most important thing.
Xiao Li: ok. I will definitely try hard to work well at this job now.
*****************
Chapter 4, text 2
Manager Wang and Xiao Li are talking about work
Manager Wang: How long will it take for this survey to be completed? [才能 indicates a negative
emphasis]
Xiao Li: According to the original plan, it should be 2 weeks, but we might be able to complete it
ahead of time, guaranteed to be finished at the weekend.
Wang Jingli: Although lately work has been busy, you also need to pay attention to your health.
Xiao Li: Thank you! Now there are so many things waiting for me to do, I really don't know which one
to do first.
Wang Jingli: Every morning I write in my notebook the things I plan to do that day, to remind myself
to arrange my time well. You can also try working this way.
Xiao Li: This method is really good! This way I will not be in a mad rush.
*****************
Chapter 4, text 3
Manager Wang and Manager Ma are talking about work
Manager Wang: What makes you so happy?
Manager Ma: We have finally succeeded in discussing business [eg doing a deal] with the company
from last time [when we had talked about that company].
Manager Wang: That's wonderful! If you work hard like this, the company will get better and better.
Manager Ma: I originally thought that doing business was simple, later I discovered that it's actually
very difficult, now making money is harder and harder.
Manager Wang: Take your time, everything is difficult at the beginning, the important thing is to
accumalate experience.
Manager Ma: I believe that through all our efforts, the company's business will grow bigger and
bigger, and everything will be ok.
*****************
Chapter 4, text 4
This year, our work has been completed according to plan. During this period of time, although work
was very intense and we ran into difficulties in the middle, but because of everyone's efforts,we
successfully solved the problems, the work was completed smoothly, thank you very much for
everyone's help (to me)! In addition, Manager Ma has asked me to tell everyone some good news,
because everyone completed the job on time, the company has decided to give everyone a bonus of
an extra 3,000 yuan this month. Thank you everyone for your hard work these 3 months or so, I
hope next year we can have greater achievements.
*****************
Chapter 4, text 5
When young people start work, they should not be in too much of a hurry to earn money, they
should not have their eyes only on salary and bonuses. In the first few years at work, it is important
to enrich your work experience, learn ways to communicate with coworkers, accumulate
professional knowledge, these things are more important than an income. But many times, we have
to do something that we don't want to do, even work we don't like very much. At this moment, what
we most need is as sense of responsibility towards work. Even if a person has both high abilities and
rich experiences, if he has no sense of responsibility towards work, it will be difficult to do the job
well.

Chapter 5, text 1
Wang Jing is at the furniture shop to buy a sofa
Salesperson: Hello Miss! What [kind of] furniture do you want to buy? Do you need me to give you
an introduction?
Wang Jing: Thank you, I want to buy a sofa.
Salesperson: How about this sofa? It's on sale (discount) now, it's 1,000 kuai cheaper than normal.
Wang Jing: The price is ok, but I don't know if the quality is guaranteed.
Salesperson: Don't worry, the quality is certainly not 'discounted', this kind of sofa is the most
popular one this year. There are may colours to choose from, you can look a while.
Wang Jing: This blue one seems good, I want this one.
*****************
Chapter 5, text 2
Wang Jing and Li Jin are shopping at the shopping center
Wang Jing: The fridge in our house is too old, the shopping center just happens to have sales on, we
could buy one by the way (while the sales are on).
Li Jin: There are too many things to buy today. Besides, this month, the family has already spent
more than 5,000.
Wang Jing: So much? Did you remember it wrongly, perhaps?
Li Jin: It's not a mistake. Last week, we spent more than 2,000 just to buy a sofa.
Wang Jing: But our fridge is too old, the refrideration effect is not very good, so we should buy a new
one.
Li Jin: Ok then, I didn't bring enough cash, [let's] use your credit card.
*****************
Chapter 5, text 3
Li Jin: Teacher Li invited us to go to his home (as guests), what would be a good gift to bring him?
Wang Jing: He likes wine a lot, let's buy him 2 bottles of wine.
Li Jin: But there are many kinds (brands) here, do you know which one is good?
Wang Jing: I think this one is not bad, you can see that the wine bottle is so artistic. Furthermore, it's
often advertised on TV, I think the taste should be good.
Li Jin: Adverts will only present the merits, but will not say the shortcomings. In reality, a lot of things
do not look as good as the adverts, so I can't believe the adverts completely.
Wang Jing: Yes, you're right.
*****************
Chapter 5, text 4
Buying clothes while only considering the price is not good, of course, but to only consider buying
nice‐looking clothesis also not neccessarily correct. My criteria [policy] for buying clothes is "only buy
the right one, don't buy the expensive one". First, the clothes should be comfortable to wear;
second, the quality of the clothes should be good, and furthermore, not too expensive. For me, it is
not very important for clothes to be popular [in fashion]. Many older people like to buy cheap
clothes when they are on sale, but they don't really consider whether those clothes suit them. This
point [previous sentence] is something I don't understand, because if it doesn't suit you, even if it
doesn't much, it is a waste.
*****************
Chapter 5, text 5
Online shopping is becoming more and more popular nowadays, young people especially like to buy
things online. You can buy almost anything online, you can buy books, clothes, bags, you can even
buy furniture and mobile phones. People prefer online shopping for 2 main reasons: firstly, there are
many things on the internet, moreover it is cheaper than going to the shops to buy something, it is
also the main reason to attract people to buy. Secondly, people can buy what they like whenever
they are online, the seller can send your purchases to your office or your home, which is very
convenient.
