Arithmetic Means
Arithmetic Means
Prepared by: Jonathan Ian S. Ubas Teaching Date: June 26, 2019
I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. find the arithmetic means between terms of an arithmetic sequence
III. PROCEDURE :
1. Preliminary Activities
1.1 Prayer and greetings
1.2 Checking of attendance
1.3 Setting of class mode
1.4 Collecting of homeworks
2. Lesson Proper
Activity
The class will be grouped into 97. Each group will be given 5 minutes to do the activity.
Direction: Consider the sequence 7, 12, 17, 22, 27, 32, 37. Complete the table (below)that is initially
filled-out. Observe how the data on the preceding boxes were derived
a1 a2 a3 a4 a5 a6
7 12 17 22 27 32
7 7+5 7 + 5+5 7 + 5+5+5 7 + 5+5+5+5 7 + 5+5+5+5
Analysis
1. How else can we write the terms? Study the next table (below) posted on the board and
complete it.
a1 a2 a3 a4 a5 a6
7 12 17 22 27 32
7 7+5 7 + 5+5 7 + 5+5+5 7 + 5+5+5+5 7 + 5+5+5+5
7 + 0 (5) 7 + 1 (5) 7 + 2 (5) 7 + 3 (5) 7 + 4 (5) 7 + 5 (5)
2. What is a4?...a5?...a6?
Abstraction
The teacher will discuss to the class the uses of the derived arithmetic sequence formula
(below) that will be useful in the solving for the arithmetic/geometric means.
a1 a2 a3 a4 a5 a6
7 + 0 (5) 7 + 1 (5) 7 + 2 (5) 7 + 3 (5) 7 + 4 (5) 7 + 5 (5)
7 7+d 7 + 2d 7 + 3d 7 + 4d 7 + 5d
Application
Given: a1 = 5 , a6 = 25
Missing: a2, a3, a4, and a5,
Solution: Since it is required to insert 4 terms, then there will be 6 terms in all.
using the value of d, solve for a2, a3, a4, and a5.
a2 = 5 + d, a3 = 5 + 2d, a4 = 5 + 3d, a5 = 5 + 4d
a2 = 5 + 4, a3 = 5 + 2(4), a4 = 5 + 3(4), a5 = 5 + 4(4)
a2 = 9 , a3 = 13 a4 = 17 a5 = 21
IV. EVALUATION
Direction: 1/2 sheet of paper: By-group: Answer the following questions. Show your
solution.
1. Find a1 if a8 = 54 and a9 = 60.
