Synthetic Division of Polynomials

This lesson plan is for a Math 10 class on synthetic division. The objectives are for students to be able to divide polynomials using synthetic division. The lesson will discuss the steps of synthetic division when dividing a polynomial by a binomial of the form (x - r). Examples will be worked through on the board. Students will then complete practice problems dividing polynomials using synthetic division in their activity notebooks to be evaluated for mastery of the concept.

MATH 10 LESSON PLAN

Prepared by: Jonathan Ian S. Ubas Teaching Date: July 10-11, 2019
Time: Industrious (10:00 - 11:00)

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. divide polynomials using synthetic division

II. SUBJECT MATTER

1. Topic: Synthetic Division - M10AL-Ig-1
2. References : G10 LM, pp.60-65
3. Materials : Visual aids, activity notebook

III. PROCEDURE :
1. Preliminary Activities
1.1 Prayer and greetings
1.2 Checking of attendance
1.3 Setting of class mode
2. Lesson Proper
Discussion:

Long Division of Polynomials

Steps in Dividing Polynomials Using Synthetic Division when a polynomial is to be divided by
a binomial of the form (x – r).

1. Arrange the terms in decreasing powers of the variable x (variable) placing zeros for
the missing terms.
2. Place the value of r in the upper left corner
3. The first number in the second row is the product of r and the number in the third
row of the preceding column. The second number in the third row is the sum of the
two numbers above it.
4. Repeat the procedure described in Step 3 until the last number in the third row is
obtained.
5. Write the quotient. Note that the degree of the first term is one less than the degree
of the dividend. The entries in the third row give the coefficients of and the
remainder R.

Example: (3x3 + 4x2 + 8) ÷ ( x + 2) Dividend: 3x3 + 4x2 + 8

IV. EVALUATION

Direction: Boardwork: Divide the following using Synthetic Division

1. (5x2 – 17x – 15) ÷ (x – 4) 2. (6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 6) ÷ (3x – 2)
3. (2x44+ x3 – 19x2 + 18x + 5) ÷ (2x – 5) 4. (4x + 6x4 + 5x2 – x – 10) ÷ (2x2 + 3)
V. ASSIGNMENT

Direction: In Activity Notebook. Divide the following using synthetic division.

1. (2x + x3 + 7x2 – 40) ÷ (x – 2)
2. (6x2 + x3 + 2x +44) ÷ (x + 2)
3. ( x3 + 35 + 9x2 +13x) ÷ (x – 5)
4. (–13x + 2x3 – 5x2 – 15) ÷ (2x + 5)
