Lesson Plan

Topic: Nouns and Verbs

Kim Phillips

Know:
The student will know…
-the terms noun and verb
-that nouns and verbs must be present to have a complete sentence
-that nouns are people, places, and things
-that verbs are action words
Understand:
The student will understand that…
-Nouns and verbs are the most critical components of our everyday
conversations.
-Without the use of nouns and verbs, our written language would have
no meaning.
Do:
The student will be able to…
-identify nouns and verbs isolated and in text
-use nouns and verbs correctly in sentences

Pre-assessment: Students will be given a worksheet to identify nouns and


verbs.
Day 1:
Whole Group:
- Review nouns and verbs (previously taught skills)
-Model locating them in sentences.
-Have the class sort word cards under “Noun” and “Verb”. Make note
of those having difficulty.
-Short assessment of students identifying nouns and verbs in
sentences.

Day 2:
Whole Group: Review nouns and verbs.
Model using nouns and verbs correctly in sentences.
Small Groups: Have small groups of students work together to fill in nouns
and verbs with a given set of words. Some students may need to be
put into a small group to re-teach. These students will practice
locating people, places, things, and action words in sentences.
Day 3:
Quick review of nouns and verbs
Divide students into groups based on Learning Styles.

ST: Students will complete worksheets identifying and using nouns and
verbs.

SF: Students will choose an animal and imagine what the animal would think if
it had to go to school. Have the students write sentences about what
the animal would see and do. Circle the nouns and underline the verbs
in the sentences.

NT: Students will explain what nouns and verbs are and give 5 examples of
each.

NF: Students will make a display of pictures, either drawn and colored or cut
out of magazines. The display will be labeled so that it shows an
understanding of nouns and verbs. (Student created not in packet)

Day 4: The Students will be given a Quiz on Nouns. The Quiz will include
sorting nouns/verbs, filling in the blanks, and drawing nouns/verbs.

Anchor activity: Think of as many nouns and verbs as you can. Use pictures
in the classroom for help. Draw or label the pictures on paper.
