Its Oscar night once again. You and a billion other people from ninety countries around the
world have just turned on your TV.s to see who Hollywood will honor this year.
The academy of motion picture arts and sciences has chosen nomines to compete in categories
including best picture, best actor, best actress, and best director, actors and actress from
around the world have come to Hollywood to take part in the gala event.
As always, opinions of the nominations have been mixed many groups are unhappy. Lately,
there have not been many great roles for women. In fact, there has seldom, been a Hollywood
actress who has worked past the age of of 45. I have recently read several scripts, ¨said one
well-know actress¨,and i ´ve rejected all of them.
The stories are ridiculous. This sentence of good roles for women many partly explain why out
of more than 2000 Oscar awards fewer than 300 have gone.
Have gone to women african-american actors and actresss have also felt excluded. Fewer than
ten have gotten awards for acting.
Actors and actresses withe physical disabilities have not major roles either. Many movies have
recently told the stories of people who are blind or paralyzed, but¨able-bodied¨ Hollywood
stars have played these parts.
On screen as well as off, we still have a long way to go toward equal opportunity.
In the meantime. Hollywood has produced another evening of glitter and glamour as movies
continue to fascinate and entertain us. As one actor said, ¨they take us to place we have never
been and allow us to see things we have never seen¨

Read some facts about the changing american family. Complete the statements.Use the
correct form of verbs in the boxes
The american family has changed a lot in the past thirty- five years. In the 1960s.
Couples began to get married at an older age. They also got divorced more frequently
than they ever did and had fewer children.
Age
In 1960, the average age for marriage for women was 20.3 and for men, 22.8
Today it has risen to 24.1 for women and 26.3 for me. In the early 1960s, most divorces
occured among couples older than 45.Today people of all ages getting divorced at a rate of
more than 50 percen. This, in part, has created many single-parent homes.
Birth Rate
In the mid-1960s, birth rates began to drop. Then almost 60 percent of women had three
or more children by the time they were in their late thirties.
These days, 35 percent of women in the same age group have only two children. In
addition, the number of births to older women has greatly increased.
Living Arrangements
Before 1960, most children stayed in their parents´ homes until they got married. This
pattern has changed since then. Today many single people live alone.
