Spring Design

The document summarizes the design of a spring, including its physical dimensions, material properties, calculations of spring rate and maximum force it can withstand. Key details are: - The spring has an outer diameter of 64mm, inner diameter of 50mm, and wire diameter of 6.5mm. - It is made of music wire and has a free length of 252mm. - Calculations show it has a spring rate of 14.4 N/mm and can withstand a maximum force of 1516.59N before failure, corresponding to a compression of 100.8mm. - For an assembly with 6 identical springs, the total maximum force is 9101.4N.

Spring design

Physical dimension :
Diameter of spring wire (d) = 6.5 mm
Outside diameter of spring (Dout ) = 64 mm
Inner diameter of spring (Din ) = 50 mm
Mean diameter of spring (D) = 57.5 mm
Free length of spring (Lo ) =252 mm
Rise angles of coil=8.4 deg
Material type:= music wire ASTM A228
Type of ends: squared, closed with ends ground

Using formula from design data hand book:

D=D 0 - d
D=64-7=57.5 mm
Spring index (c) = D/d
c=57.5/6.5
⸫c=8.84
Now, for calculation of active coil using design data hand book table: 7-2
Nt =Na +2
Na=9
For value of G using design data book hand book table: 7-7
G=80 Gpa
Spring rate of scale (K):
K=d4G/8D3N
⸫ K=14.40 N/mm
For minimum tensile strength,
A=0.145, m=2211, d=6.5 mm
Sut=A/(dm)
=1667.43 Mpa
Г=0.45 × Sut {From table 7-6}
⸫ Г =0.45 × 1667.43 = 750.3 Mpa
Force on the spring :
KB= (4C+2) / (4C-3) where, KB= stress concentration factor
Fmax = (Гℼ d3) / (8KBD)
=1516.59
So, maximum force a sping can withstand is 1516.59 N
And , its corresponding length for maximum compression is
y= F/k
= 1516.59/ 14
= 100.8 mm
=10.8 cm
So, our design calculation will be based upon maximum force each spring will withstand and
maximum compression length.
For 6 springs, maximum force F=9101.4 N
