INTRODUCTION

Engineering is the branch of science and technology concerned with the design,
building and use of engines, machine and structures.Computer is an electronic
device for storing and processing data, typically in binary form, according to
instruction given to it in a variable program. Engineering and computer as a whole,
is the putting together of the two techniques to archive a desired result.

ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER

Engineering and computer are branches of science coming together to give or
produce a certain result in line with a desired want. Alot of work can be done by the
use of computer in engineering i.e Autocad is a software which enables user to
draw or construc lines at given dimensions.
Computer has provided advance form of work in engineering such as
exploded drawings,printing sketches etc. Engineering itself has alot of branches
like computer engineering, mechanical, aeronautics, electrical and so on.

FEATURES OF COMPUTER

The characteristics of computers which have made them so powerful and

universally useful are:

SPEED : In general, no human being can compete to solving the complex

computation, faster than computer.
ACCURACY : Since Computer is programmed, so what ever input we give it
gives result with accuratly.
STORAGE : Computer can store mass storage of data with appropriate formate.
DILIGENCE : Computer can work for hours without any break and creating error.
VERSATILITY : We can use computer to perform completely different type of
work at the same time.
POWER OF REMEMBERING : It can remember data for us.
NO IQ : Computer does not work without instruction.
NO FEELING : Computer does not have emotions, knowledge, experience,
feeling.

Today, engineers rely on computers for much of the process. Using computers and
specialty computer software, engineers can design, test and make changes to
products in minimal time. Computers help them complete the task at hand much
more quickly.

Product engineers apply science, math and original thought to develop new
products or new product solutions. Traditionally, this consisted of drawing out new

products by hand, then building them. But this was laborious. Today, engineers rely
on computers for much of the process. Using computers and specialty computer
software, engineers can design, test and make changes to products in minimal time.
Computers help them complete the task at hand much more quickly.

Computers can be used to design and engineer products.

CAD
CAD, or computer-aided design, is the process of designing new products using
computer software. Such software helps designers and engineers take their ideas
from a concept state to a model in a 3-D environment. CAD software, such as that
from SolidWorks, features a user-friendly interface to allow engineers to bring their
ideas to life more quickly. And when you're engineering a new product, being fast
to market is key to staying competitive.

CFD
Typically, when engineers are developing things such as airplanes and automobiles,
they'll put the product through wind tunnel testing to make sure that drag is
minimized. Drag slows the speeds of such vehicles, which can lead to a reduction
in fuel economy. CFD, or computational fluid dynamics, software has allowed
engineers to do such testing virtually. Using a computer, they can take their CAD
designs and put them through wind tunnel testing in 3-D. This saves time, in that
they can immediately calculate such effects without having to physically test them.

File Sending
An important stage in product development is prototyping. Engineers create one-off
models of their parts to test for form, fit and function. Some companies have
prototyping machines in house, while others outsource for these test parts.
Computers have made outsourcing for prototype parts much easier. Prototyping
service providers, such as Quickparts, offer online quotes for such services.
Furthermore, computers also make it easier to exchange this information. Engineers
can upload their CAD files to websites and select what materials and technologies
they want used to create their parts.

Alterations
Before computers, when design changes needed to be made, engineers had to open
up the blueprint, and in some cases, redo the entire thing. But with computers and
CAD software, if changes need to be made, engineers can open the appropriate file
and make them within minutes on the computer. Computers facilitate the ability to
make corrections quickly, so engineers can develop their products with ease and
speed.

Computer has making human life faster because of its incredible speed,Accuracy
and storage, with which human can save anything and search it out easily when
needed. We can say computer a versatile machine because it is very flexible in
performing their jobs. but Computers have several important advantages and
disadvantages.

ADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER
MULTITASKING
Multitasking is one of the major advantage of computer. Person can perform
multiple task, multiple operation, calculate numerical problems within few seconds.
Computer can perform trillion of instructions per second.

SPEED
Now computer is not just a calculating device. Now a day’s computer has very
important role in human life. One of the main advantages of computer is its
incredible speed, which helps human to complete their task in few seconds. All the
operations can be performed very fast just because of its speed elsewise it takes a
long time to perform the task.

Cost/ Stores huge amount of data

It is a low cost solution. Person can save huge data within a low budget.
Centralized database of storing information is the major advantage that can reduce
cost.

ACCURACY
One of the root advantage of computer is that can perform not only calculations but
also with accuracy.

DATA SECURITY
Protecting digital data is known as data security. Computer provide security from
destructive forces and from unwanted action from unauthorized users like
cyberattack or access attack.

DISADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER
Virus and hacking attacks
Virus is a worm and hacking is simply an unauthorized access over computer for
some illicit purpose. Virus is being transferred from email attachment, viewing an
infected website advertisement, through removable device like USB etc. once virus
is transferred in host computer it can infect file, overwrite the file etc.
For example: Huge portion of internet was going down including Twitter, Netflix,
Reddit and CNN in October 2016 because the largest DDoS attack was launched on
service provider DYN using IoT Botnet.

Online Cyber Crimes

Online cyber-crime means computer and network may have used in order to

commit crime. Cyberstalking and Identity theft are the points which comes under
online cyber-crimes. For example: one may get the access of the access to your
shopping account like amazon account now that person will be able to know your
personal details like debit card or credit card number which can be than misused.

Reduction in employment opportunity

Mainly past generation was not used of the computer or they have the knowledge
of computer they faced a big problem when computer came in field. As we have
seen in banking sector senior bank employees faced this problem when computer
came to the banking sector.
Above were the main disadvantage of computer, no IQ, Dependency, No feeling,
Break down are the basic disadvantages of computer.

WHY ENGINEERING IS SO IMPORTANT TO SOCIETY

Engineering is a profession in which scientific knowledge and mathematics is used

and experimented with to develop ways that benefit mankind, making it extremely
important to society for several reasons.

Engineering encompasses a whole range of industries that could include on-site,

practical construction work as well as evaluating safety systems from an office.
They use the knowledge they have within a specific industry in order to make
things work and solve problems, whether this be with transport, medicine,
entertainment, space or the environment. In fact, engineering is behind everything.
Mobile phones? They’re down to engineers. Make-up? Also, down to engineers.
Cars, computers, shoes and even cutlery? It’s all down to engineers.

The environment that engineers work in ranges from offices to studios and
laboratories to the outdoors and even underground. Engineering is very closely
linked to technology, and the rise of it, which is why it has played a huge part in
technological advances including computers, hospital machines, the internet and
more.

Healthcare has also improved dramatically thanks to advancements in medical

technology thanks to engineers. The improvement of medical technology has meant
that the discovery of illnesses and treatment has helped to save and improve the
lives of many people.

Credible engineers that have changed society include Alan Turing, who invented
the Enigma machine that helped to bring an end to World War II, the engineers
behind high speed flight that helped to send man to space and the engineers behind
advancements in communication- who’d of thought we could see and talk to
someone on a screen from anywhere in the world.

New developments are taking place every single day. Have you heard of the
Crossrail in London? It will increase the transport capacity in London and the
South East by 10%, contributing to shorter journey times and easier, quicker
connections.

No one knows exactly how engineers could make a difference to society in the
future, but it is guaranteed that they will. New engineering jobs are constantly
appearing alongside new and innovative technologies. Though it’s easy to overlook
the sheer amount of work that engineers do, it is inevitable to understand that there
is more to engineering that is first thought.

If being at the forefront of technology in the future and helping to make a

difference to lives is something that interests you, an engineering career could be
the perfect choice. At GET, we have been designing and delivering engineering
training programmes since 1977.

CHAPTER 4

CONCLUSION
Engineering and computer have made the engineering foundation erect and strong
and also improve engineering perspective. Engineering has bring about the advance
form o technology in several ways.
