Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Exploring With E-Books

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 9th

Content Standard Addressed: MGSE9-12.A.CED.2 Create linear, quadratic, and exponential equations in two
or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with
labels and scales. (The phrase “in two or more variables” refers to formulas like the compound interest
formula, in which A = P(1 + r/n)nt has multiple variables.)

Technology Standard Addressed: 6. Creative Communicator – Students communicate clearly and express
themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media
appropriate to their goals. Students: create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources
into new creations.

Selected Technology Tool: Microsoft Office PowerPoint

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson idea will enhance the learning for all students in the classroom by providing an activity that the
students have a choice about. The students will choose their own subtopic to cover and will be able to draw
on their own creativity to determine how they will present their material. This hands-on, customizable activity
will also engage the students in the education process more than a simple lecture would.

Lesson idea implementation:

Teachers will introduce this lesson by going through the example e-book provided on using equations to solve
a real-world problem. The teacher will then split the students into groups of two or three in order to create
their e-book to somehow satisfy the standard to be covered. The students will have a choice in if they want to
create an instructional “how-to” book, story book, or something different. The students will have one class
period to outline their ideas and brainstorm how they will present the material in their e-book. Then, the next
day in class they will be asked to create the book using PowerPoint and narrate the PowerPoint in order to
make it into an e-book.
Once each group has completed their book, they will be asked to present them. While one group is
presenting, the rest of the students will be asked to take notes on the book being presented and form any
questions to ask the authors if applicable. The creation of a product will engage the students more in their
own learning experience and help them better understand the subject material as they have to teach it. After
each group has presented and the students should feel comfortable with the subject material, the teacher
will give a short quiz to test the students’ understanding of how to use equations to solve problems. It would
be best if the quiz could be taken using instant response tools so the students could immediately get

feedback and the teacher could immediately know if there were any common misunderstandings that needed
to be addressed as soon as possible.

Reflective Practice:
After completion of this lesson, the teacher could challenge the students to share their e-book with a sibling,
parent, or peer outside of the class. They would be asked to teach someone the subject material using their
own creation and then report back to the teacher how well it worked. The student could come up with their
own way to assess the learning of their pupil. Whether they wanted to give an oral exam, written quiz, short
project, worksheet, or anything would be up to them; they would just have to report back to their teacher in
a short essay how effective their book was.
