Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Grade 8 Mathematics: Explore

This document contains a lesson plan for teaching factoring to 8th grade mathematics students. The objectives are for students to define and describe factoring, illustrate factoring through examples, and apply factoring to real-life situations. The lesson will involve motivating students with a factoring activity in groups. Students will then learn about factoring through definition, examples, and practice problems. They will generalize when an expression can be said to be factored. For evaluation, students will complete statements and problems involving factoring. Their assignment is to factor polynomials using algebra tiles.

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of one-hour discussion, the Grade 8 students will be able to do the following:
a. define and describe factoring;
b. illustrate factoring; and
c. cite situations in real life in which factoring can be applied.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic : Factoring
References : Oronce, Orlando A. and Mendoza, Marilyn O. 2015. E – MATH:
Worktext in Geometry. Quezon City. Rex Printing Company, Inc.
Aseron, Elizabeth R. et.al. 2013. Mathematics - Grade 7
Learner’s Material. Pasig City. Department of Education
Duration : 60 minutes
Materials Needed : Chalk, chalkboard, manila paper, marker, tape
III. PROCEDURE

Teacher’s Activity

A. Daily Routine
1. Prayer
2. Greeting
3. Checking of Attendance

B. Motivation

Explore:
The class will be divided into four groups. The teacher will assigned a number to each group. The
students will try to find all pairs of integers in which the product is the number assigned to their group.
.

C. Presentation of the lesson

The teacher will share the objectives.

The teacher will process the activity.

D. Lesson Proper

The teacher will define and illustrate what it means to factor and will provide sufficient examples.

E. Fixing Skills
A. Fill in the blank with the missing factor that produces the required product.
1) ___ (3x – 7)= -15x+35
2) ___ (8a – 7b) =
16a2b – 14ab2

B. Factor each of the following completely. If the expression is not factorable, write prime.
1) 4a + 28
2) 9y – 45
3) 5y + 27

F. Generalization

The students will answer the question: When can you say that an expression is factored?

G. Valuing

The students will cite situations in real-life in which factoring can be applied.

IV. EVALUATION

A. Complete each statement with the correct term or phrase.

1) In 2x(x + 3) = 2x2+6x, 2x2+6x is called the ____
2) In the expression -5y(2y – 1), 5y and 2y – 1 are called ______

B. Fill in the blank with the missing factor that produces the required product.
1) ___ (4x + 8)= x2+2x
2) ___ (2x2 – 3x +6) =
– 8x4 + 12x3 – 24x2

C. Factor each of the following completely. If the expression is not factorable, write prime.
1) 28m + 42
2) 3x – 24
3) 3x +6y – 2c

V. ASSIGNMENT

Directions: Factor these polynomials using algebra tiles. Draw the tiles below each polynomial.
a) 8x2 – 4x
b) 2x2 + 10x
