Home Environment

A child's home environment affects their educational experiences in many ways. It

depends on the type of home environment that they are exposed to for example if they have a

supportive home environment they will more than like have a good education experience

compared to a student that has family problems at home. Problems can range from divorced

parents, exposure to alcohol, drugs, emotional distress, lack of support, or abuse. There is no

limit to the kinds of situations that may affect a child.

Families play a significant role in students learning outcomes because families are what a

child first encounters when they come into this world. Immediate families have the job of

teaching young children from right and wrong. Also, parents are to provide children with

emotional support. When that does not happen, children will begin to act just as they were

taught. Or if children regularly view violent behaviors, they will start to show that towards their

classmates, causing them to be in trouble consistently affecting their learning.

I have seen this happen first hand the parents of students were not abusive towards him,

but it had more to do with cultural beliefs that affected his education. They did not understand

the importance of education; it was all about work and what was best for their family.

So my student was required to work every weekend, vacations, and if they needed him, he would

not attend school for a couple of weeks so he could work. I noticed that his grades were

deteriorating the more he missed, but if he were at school, he would fall asleep in class because

he was tired from working. It was sad to see him, so go through that, mainly because I knew his

potential, and if he only dedicated himself to school, he could go far in regards to college. There
was not much we could do because he was already eighteen, and his parents were the ones

requiring him to work.

I asked him if he was thinking about attending college once he graduated, he said no that

he is going straight into working full time once he graduates. I said that's good you could do both

he replied that it wasn't an option because his parents want him to work full time to provide for

his whole family. I understood that I did not want to push any more since I come from the same

Hispanic culture I understood his position. It is just unfortunate to see that his parents are stuck

in that old mentality that work is the only option after high school.

There is a specific limit to whereas educators we intervene for our students. The best we

can do is educate our parents as much as possible, so they understand how vital their support and

influence is for their children — Always having the open communication with them enough so

that they feel comfortable enough to come to us with any questions that may arise. We can also

create a safe environment so that when they are at school, our students feel safe and can forget

what is going on at home for a while. While also keeping an ear out for any comments a child

can make about their home environment in case it is abusive. If it is, we can take action and

report it so that they get the help they need to better their situation. It all is in the benefit for that

child to have the best educational experience they deserve.

Parents should know that their actions affect their children in many ways as simple as not

showing them emotion to not taking the time to meet their needs all this can affect their

development overall changing their educational experience which will dictate what the rest of

their educational career is like.
