Wind Tunnel Testing of Bridge

This document describes wind tunnel testing of bridge decks conducted by researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The researchers developed a new experimental setup that can replicate real bridge motions using actuators internally connected to a section model in the wind tunnel. This allows them to predict self-excited wind forces under realistic bridge vibrations and obtain aerodynamic derivatives characterizing the motion-dependent forces. The researchers tested their setup on a section model of the Hardanger Bridge and were able to determine flutter conditions and compare aerodynamic derivatives to rational functions.

Wind tunnel measurements?

• To predict wind-induced forces due to:

– Motion of the bridge deck
– Wind turbulence
– Vortex shedding
– Static wind pressure

2
Section models - how it’s done

• Static load coefficients

• Rational coefficients
• Indicial functions
• Aerodynamic admittance
functions
• Aerodynamic derivatives

3 3
Aerodynamic derivatives

• Define motion-dependent (self-excited ) forces

• Aerodynamic derivatives are used to define aeroelastic
