List of ATP Simulation Cases: C Power System Transients and Their Computation

This document provides a list of ATP simulation cases that illustrate examples in Chapter 1 of the course "Power System Transients and Their Computation". It describes 6 ATP simulation cases, including the energization of an RL circuit, double frequency transients from load disconnection, ferroresonance caused by a grading capacitor, and three phase capacitor bank switching with various grounding configurations. Students are tasked to run the simulations, vary parameters, and analyze the results.

List of ATP Simulation Cases

COURSE
Power System Transients and Their Computation

The ATP simulation cases used for the examples illustrated in Chapter 1 of the course
Power System Transients and Their Computation are described below. Only circuit
configurations (.adp files) created using ATPDraw version 2.3 are provided. It is
students' task to create corresponding ATP input data file, to execute the data case and
view/comment the simulation results using PlotXY. Also variations in the simulation case
should be performed by students.

Three lines comments of each .adp file can be made visible in ATPDraw by Edit <
Comment... or View < Comment Line.

‘ Examples in Chapter 1
! 1.2.2 Energization of an RL circuit

EnergRL.adp Energization of a 500-kV shunt reactor. Switch (Switches < Switch time
contr.) closes at t = 4.936 ms, when the source voltage is crossing zero.
R and L are represented by Branch Linear < Resistor, Inductor,
respectively. Sinusoidal voltage source is represented by Sources < AC
type 14. )t = 10 :s and Tmax = 100 ms. Plot output of source node
voltage and switch current will be created.

! 1.2.3 Double-frequency transients

DoublFre.adp Single-phase disconnection of an inductive load. Switch open command

is specified for t = 1 ms, but note, switch opens at current zero-crossing
at t = 4.85 ms. )t = 5 :s and Tmax = 10 ms.

! 1.2.4 Ferroresonance

Ferro.adp Ferroresonance caused by a grading capacitor of an open circuit breaker

and 245-kV inductive voltage transformer. The voltage transformer is
represented in a simplified manner by the nonlinear magnetizing
inductance (ATPDraw: Branch Nonlinear < L(i) type 98). Cseries = 150 pF.

)t = 10 :s and T max = 200 ms. Modify the value of C to 300 pF and

observe simulation results: current and voltage of nonlinear L.

Ferro_R.adp A damping resistor is added parallel to the magnetizing inductance to

avoid ferroresonance compared to the case Ferro.adp.

! 1.3 Transients in three-phase circuits

Cap3ph1.adp Three-phase capacitor bank switching. Neutral of the bank is weekly

grounded through C = 1 nF corresponding to isolated neutral. Only phase
a of the 3-phase switch is opened, whereas the switch poles b and c
remain closed.

Cap3ph2.adp Three-phase capacitor bank switching. Neutral of the bank is isolated.

Three phase disconnection of the bank results in an isolated subnetwork
in ATP. See ATP output list CAP3PH2.LIS. Neutral N will be shorted
to ground after 3 phase opening. Compare with Cap3ph3.adp.

Cap3ph3.adp Three-phase capacitor bank switching. Neutral of the bank is grounded by

C = 1 nF. Three phase disconnection of the bank shows correct results.

Cap3ph4.adp Three-phase capacitor bank switching. Neutral of the bank is grounded

solidly. Compare the simulation results with Cap3ph3.adp.
