Chapter II: Review of Related Literature

According to Heryati R a member of the customer success team at 6Q, and is based

in Perth, Western Australia. Healthy workplace environment is ideal when it comes

to maintaining a positive outcome in a stressful atmosphere. The most important

thing that influences employee motivation and happiness, and how productive and

efficient they can be, all goes down to their working environment. And healthy

workplace environment is good for your company as it could lead to bringing sales

for business. It's improves productivity and reduces costs related to absenteeism,

turnover, workers’ compensation, and medical claims.

Healthy does not only constitute as needing medical attention, it could also be the

outlook of the workplace and even the surroundings. There are four aspects to look

into when creating a healthy workplace environment by (Heryati R).

The Workplace culture were every company has their own corporate culture that

determines its value and it usually creates a standard that employees generally

follow.

The physical environment and occupational health & safety of the employee. To

reduce the worry of the employees by looking into the safety of the workplace.
The Health and lifestyle practice employees are the best asset of every organisation,

and putting effort into employee wellness can encourage better teamwork,

increased productivity and reduce sick leave and workplace accidents.

The Supportive workplace environment we're everyone has personal problems and

it is only human that some personal emotions get brought into the workplace. As the

employee, show compassion and always there for them can help to feel relieved.

A happy and healthy employee is a productive employee. People who enjoy their

jobs are more likely to engage thoroughly with their work. As an employee, it is

always in your best interest to keep your staff happy; otherwise, resentment could

start to impact on the quality of their work or they may even consider leaving.

(Heryati R)

You can encourage health and wellness of your employees by having a weekly

exercise program such as a yoga session before the start of their work day or an

aerobics class after work. This not only encourages a healthy lifestyle among your

team but also give them the opportunity to get to know their workmates better.

(Heryati R)

Every workplace has a combination of characters, and what works to motivate a

particular employee, may not necessarily help others. Get to know your employees

and find out whether a hands-on approach or more independence will help them.

(Heryati R)
This should apply to all employees regardless of their position or designation in the

company. If a supervisor constantly misses deadlines, you should take it as seriously

as you would with a junior employee. If your policy changes, ensure everyone knows

about it. (Heryati R)

Healthy eating is not about strict dietary restrictions, staying unrealistically thin, or

depriving yourself of the foods you love. It is about feeling great, having more

energy, improving your outlook and your mood. Another great way to create a

healthy workplace environment is by eating healthy, and no – skipping lunch break

because employees are busy is not a good excuse. Try catering a healthy lunch meal

such as salads or sandwiches. You could also provide a bowl of fruits for snacks.

(Heryati R)

Team building activities not only bond employees closer but also motivate them,

creating a positive workplace environment. These activities help improve internal

communication and productivity, boosting morale at the workplace and in helping

employees get to know each other better. Read our blog on Team Building Ideas for

Great Staff Engagement to get some ideas. (Heryati R)

Another great way to create a healthy workplace environment is by encouraging

your employees to take a quick 5-minute break from their desk. Regular breaks will

assist to relieve muscle fatigue, eyestrain and to restore the level of concentration.

There are a couple of apps that you can permanently install on your employees’
desktop, which reminds them take to a break and stretch. Try some of these free

apps such as Eyeleo or PC Work Break. (Heryati R)

Working in a clean and comfortable office can have tremendous effects on the

interactions among colleagues. Even if your office does not get the sunlight, try to

make an effort to provide a relaxing atmosphere with comfortable furniture,

working equipment and add a few work lights to make it brighter. (Heryati R)

Creating a healthy workplace environment does not have to be difficult or costly. A

healthy workplace environment improves productivity and reduces costs related to

absenteeism, turnover, workers’ compensation, and medical claims. A summary,

there are four aspects to look into when creating a healthy workplace environment.

(Heryati R)

It is ideal when it comes to maintaining a positive outcome in a stressful

atmosphere. Deal with problems as soon as possible and regularly ask for feedback

on how your workplace could be improved. (Heryati R)

A healthy work environment is a complex project that can take many businesses

years of hard work and effort. To get started, your company must assess its areas of

strengths and weaknesses, determine the needs of the employees, organize a

wellness program and coordinate wellness efforts. Your company will need to

cultivate a culture of wellness and gain employee buy-in.

And by sustaining the productivity of the business it can help the business

employees to improve their health, safety and wellbeing of their workplace. (World

Health Organization, 2009).There are two ways to improve productivity of the

business;

First, healthy employees feel better, have more energy and endurance, and are more

capable of working hard at their jobs.Second, healthy work environments can

contribute to employee happiness. Companies that encourage employees to eat

right and take care of their bodies indirectly show employees that they are valued.

A healthy working environment is one in which there is not only an absence of

harmful conditions that can cause injury and illness, but an abundance of health

promoting ones (WHO, 2010). In order to sustain the workplace health and

wellbeing we considered our employees type of works to provide activities or

initiatives designed of healthy environment.

An effective workplace health and wellbeing program simultaneously addresses

individual, environmental and organisational factors affecting worker wellbeing.

First is the individual factors where we focusses on individual needs such as

improving access to health services and information, as well as building the

knowledge and skills of workers to adopt healthy lifestyles.Second is the

Environmental factors to provide a physical work environment that supports healthy

choices and offers resources to actively encourage healthy behavior. And last are
the organizational factors are active commitment of management and business

practices and policies support and encourage healthy behaviors.

Maintaining a healthy work environment can reduce your business’s healthcare

spending over the course of many years. And it can help your company retain

employees and save money on training and recruiting.

Absenteeism is what happens when employees call out sick which the cause of

having no healthy environment. Absenteeism is expensive because it reduces

productivity. The healthier your work environment, the healthier your employees

will be. Employees that are healthy call out sick less and therefore cost less money

overall.

Extensive research has uncovered the connection between a healthy corporate

culture and a productive workforce. According to iOFFICE's latest numbers,

employees who are not supported by a health-conscious culture make three times as

many mistakes as those who are.

These unsupported workers are also 31 percent more likely to struggle maintaining

focus on work tasks, and 44 percent more likely to spend less time engaged with

business. Overall, this troubling effect has a clear impact on companies' bottom
lines, as companies with healthy corporate cultures outperform their S&P 500 by 5

percent.

It doesn't take much for businesses to improve in this area. By focusing on wellness,

companies can take tremendous strides financially. For every $1 a business invests in

corporate health and wellness programs, it saves $3.27 on health insurance.

A workplace culture is very important, playing a large role in whether or not an

organization is a happy and healthy place to work. Culture is socially learned and

transmitted by members; the core values of an organization begin with its

leadership. When the interaction between the leadership and employees is good,

the latter will make a greater contribution, be encouraged to accomplish the

objectives assigned by the organization, ultimately enhancing job satisfaction. (Zoe

Tansey)

A bad culture can lead to poor health and reduced productivity. Leaders have to

appreciate their function in maintaining a positive workplace health culture. This

would in return ensure consistent behavior between members of the organization,

reducing conflicts and creating a healthy working environment for employees. (Zoe

Tansey)

A work environment with good communication is one where everybody knows each

others’ names, employees from all tiers are approachable and friendly, and there is a
welcoming familiarity and openness that allows interpersonal relationships beyond

the realm of the business’s mission. And it welcomes creative, diverse opinions and

persons fosters growth, and, in turn, makes the workplace a fun place to be. The

physical environment of a workplace greatly affects the positivity within the firm.

Great energy can be created by an, attractive, comfortable physical environment.

This energy ultimately enhances productivity and success. (Jeff Pelliccio)
