Clarinet

1. When putting your clarinet together, make sure it

looks like the picture! BEWARE of the bridge key on
the side!

Put the reed on the flat side of the mouthpiece,

towards you.

2. To hold the clarinet, remember your right hand goes on the

lower section of the instrument and your left hand goes on the
upper section. Drop your hands by your side and let them relax.
Bring them up the clarinet. Your hands should be gently curved.
Be sure to cover all the tone holes completely!

3. To make your first sound, remember the three points of good

embouchure (mouth position):
a. Curl Bottom Lip
b. Firm Corners
c. Seal around Mouthpiece

See the picture of the young lady below for reference.

Once you have your embouchure set,

remember to think “hee” and exhale lots of
air into your clarinet!
4. To take care of your clarinet, you will need:
a. A Clarinet Swab
b. Cork Grease

These can be purchased at your local music store. Any type of cork grease for
sale at the music store will work. However, if available, get a silk clarinet swab.
The silk material wicks the moisture of the clarinet very quickly and will not snag
on anything inside the clarinet.

To swab out your instrument, hold your clarinet with the mouthpiece towards the
ground (do not let your clarinet touch the ground). Drop the weight on the end
of the string into the bell of the clarinet and pull it through the mouthpiece
gently. Repeat this until there is no more water inside the clarinet.

To use cork grease, uncap the tube and gently apply a thin layer of cork grease
directly onto the corks on your clarinet. Then, use your fingers to rub the cork
grease onto the cork to spread it equally on the cork. This can be done before
you play your clarinet or afterwards.

5. Suggested Materials:
a. Music Stand
b. Metronome
c. Tuner

A music stand is important for any player to promote proper posture and prevent
pain when playing clarinet. For home practice, a wire folding music stand is a
wonderful choice as it allows for convienent storage and transport for honor
bands.

A metronome and tuner are VERY important for practicing. There are many
different resources to find these. If purchasing, there are models available that
function as both a metronome and a tuner. However, there are also fun
metronome/tuner apps available for purchase/download
for smartphones.

6. Happy Practicing!
