Engineering Mathematics 2A (Scee08009) : Refresher Sheet
REFRESHER SHEET
Throughout Engineering Mathematics 2A (and 2B), and some other Engineering classes, you
will need to perform certain types of basic manipulations without undue effort. The following
examples should help you to diagnose topics on which you need practice.
If you cannot, easily, answer a question make a note to revise the topic using your notes
from Mathematics for Scientists and Engineers 1A/1B and the textbook “Modern Engineering
Mathematics”, by Glyn James. If you need further help other library books may help, some
students find “Engineering Mathematics” by KA Stroud helpful (it’s a little old but has lots of
examples).
Do not take short cuts by copying, cribbing or sharing – you will be lying to yourself and
will place yourself at a disadvantage for the course. The aim is to see what you can do (and
what you can’t) in about 25 minutes. Try to avoid referring to formulae sheets, text books or
using a calculator.

Remember, anything you cannot manage suggests strongly that revision is needed. Some
manipulations (e.g. completing the square, partial fractions, complex numbers,...) will arise
frequently in the course.
