Taking piano lessons benefits young children in the following ways (among others):
increased IQ
improved memory
increased self-confidence
improved hand-eye coordination
improved abstract reasoning skills
improved fine-motor skills- important for proper letter formation and handwriting
improved hand strength- important in younger children for handwriting and proper letter formation
increased concentration and focus- important skill for academic success in the elementary grades
increased aural (ear-brain) development- important in helping children develop the auditory discrimination
needed for learning to read
increased ability to understand mathematical and scientific concepts- learning piano involves patterns,
numbers, rhythm, fractions, and proportions; providing an important foundation for math and science
concepts
increased cognitive ability- learning to play a musical instrument results in greater and more complex
brain development
increased appreciation of cultural diversity- children listen to and learn to play many different types and
styles of music
