EXERCISES ESTIMATIONdocx PDF

This document contains 4 exercises involving constructing confidence intervals from sample data. Exercise 1 asks to construct a 99.5% confidence interval for the mean time office workers spend browsing the web based on a sample of 50 workers. Exercise 2 asks to construct a 99.8% confidence interval for the mean hours TVs are operated based on household data. Exercise 3 asks to construct a 95% confidence interval for the mean money spent on books by statistics students using a sample of 10 students. Exercise 4 asks to construct an approximate 90%-confidence interval for average MSAT scores of undergraduates using a sample of 15 students and a population standard deviation of 90.

EXERCISES

1. A corporation monitors time spent by office workers browsing the web on their computers
instead of working. In a sample of computer records of 50 workers, the average amount of time
spent browsing in an eight-hour work day was 27.8 minutes with standard deviation 8.2 minutes.
Construct a 99.5% confidence interval for the mean time spent by all office workers in browsing
the web in an eight-hour day.

2. The number of hours per day that a television set was operating was recorded for all
collection of households. Construct a 99.8% confidence interval for the mean number of hours
that a television set is in operation in all households.

3. Suppose we would like to estimate the mean amount of money spent on books by BS
Statistics students in a semester. We have data from 10 randomly selected students. Construct
a 95% confidence interval.

4. A simple random sample of 15 undergraduates is taken at a small university. The population

standard deviation is 90. Construct an approximate 90%-confidence interval for the average
MSAT score of undergraduates at the university.
