The key takeaways are that light travels in a straight line and changes direction when reflected, and that reflection of light allows us to see objects. It also discusses measuring light intensity and the formation of shadows.

Data loggers and sensors are used to measure light intensity.

Thomas Edison invented the light bulb and worked hard to improve early light bulb designs through many experiments.

Lesson

Attainment targets:

 Know that light intensity can be measured using sensors.

 Compare the brightness of a range of artificial light sources

Ask students why they think measuring light intensity is important while
designing a bedroom’ or a library or study etc.?

Ask students to list situations where strong/ intense light is required.

Ask what is the technology used to measure light intensity? Show the
equipment/ data loggers/ sensors used to measure light intensity.

Lesson Attainment targets:

 Investigate and understand that light travels in a straight line and
it changes direction when it is reflected from a surface including
mirrors.
 Using the phenomenon of light traveling in a straight line explain
the formation of shadows.
 Differentiate between a light source and a reflected light.
 Understand that when reflected light enters our eyes we see
objects.
 Using the laws of reflection, explain reflection of light at a plane
surface

Resources Engage:
Post-‐its, mirrors, foil, magnifying, glasses, and other objects that can
show the reflection of light easily, Objects that aren’t as obviously
reflective (can be any object that isn’t “shiny”)
Show pictures on a powerpoint slide show such as:
Use KWL chart or a T chart and ask students to write on post-it notes what
they know and what they want to know about light, its source and
reflection.
Generate a discussion regarding the statements that students have
written. This task will help you identify the misconceptions that students
might have regarding light.
Explore:
Set-up stations for exploration regarding different concepts.

Explain:
Bring the class together to discuss their findings.

Wrap up: Re-visit the KWL chart and use video links for consolidation

Attainment targets: Inquire about the history of light bulb and work of
Thomas Edison.
Ask students to use secondary sources of information to collect facts
about the work done by Thomas Edison.

Attainment targets: Investigate and explain the dispersion of white light

into its seven colours.

Questions for writing answers in the notebooks
Why does the visible light spectrum have different colours?
What happens during the refraction of light as light passes through a
prism?
Describe how light bends, or refracts, when traveling through different
objects.
