Lesson 6 - 2D Measurements

The document provides formulas and examples for calculating the areas and perimeters of various 2D shapes including rectangles, squares, triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and circles. It then gives a 10 question practice test involving applying the formulas to calculate missing values like side lengths, heights, widths, radii, diameters, areas, and perimeters.

Lesson 6

2D Geometric Measurements

Area is the quantity that expresses the extent of a two-dimensional figure or shape, or planar

lamina, in the plane. Surface area is its analog on the two-dimensional surface of a three-

dimensional object. ... A shape with an area of three square metres would have the

same area as three such squares.

Area Formulas
 Area of a Rectangle = Base × Height.
 Area of a Square = Base × Height.
 Area of a Square = s2
 Area of Triangle = ½(Base × Height)
 Area of Parallelogram = Base × Height.
 Area of Trapezoid = ½(Base1 + Base2) × Height.
 Area of Circle = π(radius)2 = πr2

A perimeter is a path that surrounds a two-dimensional shape. The term may be used

either for the path itself or its length—it can be thought of as the length of the outline of a shape.

The perimeter of a circle or ellipse is called its circumference. Calculating the perimeter has

several practical applications.

Perimeter Formulas
The perimeter of any polygon is the sum of the lengths of all the sides.
Note: "ab" means "a" multiplied by "b". "a2" means "a squared", which is the same as "a" times
"a".

Be careful!! Units count. Use the same units for all measurements.
Examples

square = 4a

rectangle = 2a + 2b

triangle = a + b + c

circle = 2pi r

circle = pi d (where d is the diameter)

The perimeter of a circle is more commonly known as the circumference.
