THE TRACHTENBERG SPEED SYSTEM OF BASIC MATHEMATICS

What is Trachtenberg system?

The Trachtenberg system is a system of rapid mental calculation. The system consists of a
number of readily memorized operations that allow one to perform arithmetic computations very
quickly. It was developed by the Russian Jewish engineer Jakow Trachtenberg in order to keep
his mind occupied while being in a Nazi concentration camp.

The life of Trachtenberg is as fascinating and astounding as his brilliant mathematical system
which many experts believe will eventually revolutionize the teaching of arithmetic in schools
throughout the world. The Trachtenberg method is not only speedy but simple. Once has
mastered the rules, lightning the calculation is as easy as reading a story. It looks like magic, but
the rules are based on sound logic.

BASIC MULTIPLICATION

The aims of Trachtenberg system have been discussed in the following. The first item on our
discussion is a new way to do basic multiplication. We multiply without using any memorized
multiplication tables.

Most people know the tables pretty well; in fact, perfectly, except for a few doubtful spots. Eight
times seven, or six times nine is a little uncertain to many of us, but the smaller numbers like
four times five are at the command of everyone. We approve of using this hard-won knowledge.
What we intend to do now is consolidate it. Later, we shall come back to this point. Now we
wish to do some multiplying without using the multiplication tables.

Trachtenberg system can be used to multiply large numbers in a matter of seconds without using
a calculator! Here are some quick examples of how you can use this technique.

MULTIPLICATION BY TWO:

Multiplying by 2 is trivial. We can double a number by adding it to itself, so memorizing the

table of 2 can be avoided.

Let us make the concept more clear through some examples.

Example: 1

1429 × 2

This can be done by adding the number to itself.

The answer is 2858.

Example: 2

78246 × 2

The answer is 156492.

MULTIPLICATION BY FIVE:

2468 × 5 = ?

The result of multiplication of a large number by 5 is 2468 × 5 = 12340.

So here given the shortcut method to do a quick calculation of multiplication of large numbers by
5. You will be able to multiply any number with 5 and get the result within seconds.

First step: Multiply the number by 10, i.e. simply place a zero after the number.

Second step: Half the resultant number.

Let us do some examples.

Example 1:

4536 × 5 = ?

First step: Multiply the number by 10:

4536 × 10 =45360

Second step: Divide the result from step 1 by 2:

45360 / 2 = 22680
The answer is 22680.

Another multiplication of a large number by 5 is shown below.

Example 2:

3333 × 5 = ?

First step: Multiply the number by 10:

3333× 10 = 33330

Second step: Divide the result from step 1 by 2:

33330 / 2 = 16665

The answer is 16665.

MULTIPLICATION BY ELEVEN:

1. The last number of the multiplicand (number multiplied) is put down as the right-hand figure of
the answer.
2. Each successive number of the multiplicand is added to its neighbour at the right.
3. The first number of the multiplicand becomes the left-hand number of the answer. This is the last
step.

In the Trachtenberg system, you put down the answer one figure at a time, right to left, just as
you do in the system you now use.
Take an easy example, 723 times 11:

The answer will appear under the 723, one figure at a time, from right to left, as we apply the
rules. This will be our form for setting up the work from now on. The asterisks above the
multiplicand of our example will quickly identify the numbers being used in each step of our
calculation. Let us apply the rules:

Example 1:

First step:
Put down the last figure of 723 as the right-hand figure of the answer:
Second step:
Each successive figure of 723 is added to its right-hand neighbour. 3 plus 2 is 5:

Apply the rule again, 7 plus 2 is 9:

Third step:
The first figure of 723, the 7, becomes the left-hand figure of the answer:

The answer is 7953.

Example 2:

First step:
Put down the last figure of 265 as the right-hand figure of the answer:

Second step:
Each successive figure of 265 is added to its right-hand neighbour. 5 plus 6 is 1, put down 1 in
the unit place of 11 and carry forward 1 in the tens place to the next step:
Apply the rule again, 2 plus 6together with 1 from the carry gives 9:

Third step:
The first figure of 265, the 2, becomes left-hand figure of the answer:

The answer is 2915.
