This document is a proposed study for a solar-powered heater for refrigerant super heating. It was submitted by students Oyao and Desierto to their professor Engr. Rebuta at the University of Southeastern Philippines, College of Engineering in partial fulfillment of requirements for their ME 423 Combustion Engineering course. The study aims to utilize solar energy, a sustainable resource, in large-scale applications to reduce generation costs and protect the environment compared to traditional fossil fuel sources. The document outlines the background and context of the study, but does not provide the specific problem statement, research objectives, or conceptual framework, as these sections are marked as errors.

Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The trend in renewable energy emphasizes greater consideration for sustainable development. The
global consumption of electricity from 1980 to 2015 pictures a constantly rising value; from 7,323 terawatt hours
in 1980 to 21.2 terawatt hours in 2015. The common sources associated with electrical production consists of
coal and natural gas which are known to be limited physically and are hazardous in the environment due to
emissions of toxic fumes and gases. With these reasons, the utilization of solar energy in large-scale applications
plays a vital role not just in terms of reducing the generation cost but also in protecting the environment.

Solar energy powers virtually everything in the Earth and atmosphere system. This energy warms the
air and the Earth’s surfaces, and drives the winds, currents, evaporation, clouds, rain, etc. Essentially, the process
starts when the Sun’s energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation (radiation, in short) enters the atmosphere
(Yıldız, 2018).
