Unit Lesson Plan 3- Nouns and Verbs Review
C.C. & State Standards:
RL.K.10 Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding.
L.K.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and
usage when writing or speaking.
b. Use frequently occurring nouns and verbs.
VA:Cn10.1.Ka Create art that tells a story about a life experience.
Objective: Students will be able to identify that a verb is an action word or something we
can do. In a sentence, verbs tell us what a person or thing does.
Students will be able to identify that a noun is a person, place, or a thing. In a sentence,
a noun tells us
Student Friendly Objective: I can tell that a noun is a person place or thing and that a
verb is an action. I can also tell the difference between nouns and verbs.
Assessment:
Students will have the opportunity to answer questions about verbs and nouns and help
categorize them. Students will also be able to draw a picture and with help from the
teacher identify the noun and the verb.
Key Vocabulary:
Noun- person, place, or thing
Verb- an action word or something we can do
Anticipatory Set:
Show a picture of a person, place and thing. Ask students what they all have in common.
Say, they are all nouns.
Activate Prior Knowledge:
Ask student if they remember what a verb is? If they don’t give them clues by showing
different actions.
Input:
Explain that a noun is a person, place or thing. A verb is an action word, or something
we can do. Give examples and then ask students for examples. (Differentiated
Instruction Comparison p. 134).
Guided Practice:
We will have pictures printed out of persons, places, things, and verbs. We will have 4
baskets with a label on each. We will show the picture to the students and they will tell
us which basket to put it in.
Closure: “Boys and girls, today we reviewed nouns and verbs. We learned that nouns
are three things. Please raise your hand to tell me what a noun is. Please raise your
hand to tell me what a verb is. Fantastic work!”
Independent Practice: In the kiva, we will explain to the students that words have
different jobs and parts to play. Nouns tell us who the sentence is about. Verbs help us
know what the person/thing is doing (their action). Writing is one way we can
communicate experiences we have had, and we use nouns and verbs when we
write. Another way we can communicate experiences we have had is through art. We
will have a picture draw for the students of an experience we have had. For example,
we could have a picture drawn of us jumping on the tramp. We would explain that we
can find nouns and verbs in pictures. We will then explain the noun in our picture is us,
and the verb or action we are doing is jumping.
We will invite students to share some experiences they have had. We will explain to the
students that they will draw a picture of an experience they have had. Students will
return to their tables and draw their pictures to express experiences they have had. As
teachers, we will walk around the room and ask questions about their pictures, and who
their picture is about. (Differentiated Instruction Associating Concepts p. 119).
Differentiated Instruction:
Students will be able to visually see pictures of nouns and verbs. They will have the
opportunity to sort pictures into people, places, things, and verbs (actions). Students will
be able to express experiences they have had through artwork. This will allow them to
see that we can communicate experiences we have had through words and artwork.
Comparison p.134
Comparing between two concepts can allow students to differentiate between them and
become more aware of the differences between them. Previously we had spent a day
teaching on nouns and a day on verbs. In this lesson we focused on nouns and verbs
and helped them to see and identify which one was which. They were able to give
examples of both.
Associating Concepts p.119
Associating concepts is the big picture of our unit. We wanted students to learn about
nouns and verbs, but our overall purpose for the unit was for them to understand that
words have jobs and parts to play in sentences. We wanted them to understand that
words and pictures can be used to express ourselves and feelings, and how nouns and
verbs interrelate to this concept. The students were given the opportunity to draw a
picture of an experience they had and label the noun and verb in their picture. Due to
time restrictions, we were not able to get to this part of the lesson plan, but this activity
would have allowed the students to deepen their understanding of nouns and verbs and
how they can be used.
Identify and Categorize p.48
The naturalistic learner prefers to classify and recognize concepts. By identifying and
categorizing nouns and verbs, students were able to evaluate and recall the information
they had previously learned.
