Elevated Work Platforms

Elevated work platforms must meet safety standards to prevent falls and injuries. They must comply with Canadian Standards Association Standard B354.4-02 for self-propelled boom supported platforms. Employers should ensure any platforms they purchase have certification confirming compliance with the safety requirements before allowing workers to use them.

Safety, Design and Use

Employers who use elevated work platforms, often attached to self-propelled ‘zoom-boom’ type
mobile equipment, must make sure these platforms meet the safety standard for this type of
equipment. Platforms that do not meet this standard increase the risk of workers falling, which
can result in serious injury.

These platforms must meet Canadian Standards Association Standard (CSA) B354.4-02-Self-
Propelled Boom Supported Elevating Work Platforms. Before workers use these platforms,
employers must make sure they meet the design, manufacture and safety tests of this standard.

If you purchase this type of work platform, you can request certification from the manufacturer or
distributor that the platform meets all requirements of the standard. You can get a copy of the
Standard on the CSA website www.csa.ca or by calling them at 1-800-463-6727.

Tips and Guidelines

• Don’t use an ‘in-house’ designed and built wooden or welded metal and wooden work platform.
They are unsafe.
• The machine operator must remain in the machine while workers are on the work platform.
• Don’t use platforms that don’t meet the CSA standard.
