Maestro Delta David Gier announces auditions for

Principal Viola
March 25, 2018 (CD submission deadline)
April 26, 2018 (in-person rounds)
Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Compensation: $34,911 plus health insurance/retirement package (2017-18 rate)
Season: 35 weeks (September – May)

Applicants have the choice of playing a live preliminary audition in Sioux Falls, or sending in a recording of the
preliminary audition. Due to limited availability of the audition location, applicants are encouraged to submit a
recording for the preliminary round.

RECORDED PRELIMINARY AUDITION INSTRUCTIONS:


For the recorded preliminary round, applicants are asked to submit a CD recording of selected excerpts
(see below), a 1-page resume, and $50** deposit check to:

Recordings will not be accepted after the March 25th deadline. Applicants who are invited to participate in
the semi-final round will receive a message by April 6th. Deposit checks of applicants not passed to the
semi-final round will be destroyed; checks of those passed to the semi-final round will be given back at
the live audition. Recordings will not be returned.

Recordings should not be labeled with any personal identifying information. Please include a list of tracks
with the CD. Do not make any announcements on the recording. The audio recording must be
UNEDITED. Repertoire on the recording should be:
1. Choice of the first movement exposition only of: Bartok Concerto, Walton Concerto, or Hindemith
Der Schwanendreher
2. Beethoven Symphony No. 5 Second movement (all excerpts)
3. Mendelssohn Midsummer Night’s Dream Scherzo: Beginning to D
4. Mozart Symphony No. 35 Fourth movement: m. 134-181

Recordings should be able to be played in a normal CD player. Please verify this before submitting your
recording.
LIVE PRELIMINARY AUDITION INSTRUCTIONS:

The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO) is a dynamic regional orchestra of 86 professional musicians that
performs in the 1800-seat, acoustically superb Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The orchestra’s
season consists of 7 Classical concerts, 5 Pops concerts, 3 Chamber concerts, family and educational concerts,
special programs (Lakota Music Project and Music as Medicine), and regional tours. The SDSO enjoys a growing
audience and enthusiastic community support. Recent and upcoming guest artists include Anthony Ross, Time for
Three, Emmanuel Ax, Eliot Fisk, Emanuele Arciuli, and Dawn Upshaw. Concerts are broadcast on South Dakota
Public Radio.

In addition to serving as Principal Viola of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, the chosen individual will serve
as violist of the Dakota String Quartet. The Dakota String Quartet performs chamber music recitals and
educational/community engagement programs throughout South Dakota and the tri-state region. This position is
available for employment at the beginning of the 2018-2019 season.
